Immigration Landmines in the Funding Bill
NRO ^ | Feb 14 2019 | Mark Krikorian

The text of the funding bill was released last night/this morning, and lawmakers are expected to vote on the 1,169-page measure as early as this evening. The bill is disappointing in many respects, but if it had been as advertised earlier, it might have been tolerable.

But my fears that senators Durbin and Leahy would trick the Republican conferees (none of whom knows the first thing about immigration policy) were realized. Standing out among the many distasteful provisions are two poison pills that I hope the Republican committee members either didn’t know about or didn’t understand.

The first regards the fence. I’m not fence-first guy, but physical barriers really are needed on some parts of the border, and the president has been flexible on this in the face of implacable Democratic opposition. Thus the news that the Dems agreed to $1.375 billion for the construction of “primary pedestrian fencing” (i.e., high barriers, not the low ones intended simply to stop vehicles, in places where there’s none now) seemed like a win.

It’s not. That’s because the bill allows the fencing to be built only in the Rio Grande Valley Sector in South Texas. It’s surely needed there, but real barriers are also needed elsewhere, such as the parts of the Arizona or New Mexico borders where there’s only vehicle fencing.

But the Democrats had a reason for this limitation...

That would be very reasonable and frankly, the responsible thing to do.

There are Never Trumpers out there in Freeperland having conniption fits about all of this, much of it citing the points made in this article and elsewhere that the world is coming to an end, we are doomed, Trump has screwed us, we have been had once again, etc. etc.

I’m not expert in the scams of our Federal Government, but I can read the English Language. The Conference Report refers to Continuing Appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security for Fiscal Year 2019.

That means that the provisions in this legislation applies to the current Fiscal Year of 2019 and for the funding of certain functions. In other words, it applies this years and only for the monies allocated in this bill. If Trump declares a National Emergency, he can use other money to execute any number of things that he wants to do, including building walls, detaining immigrants, seizing land for defense purposes, etc., etc. This thing is a speed bump, easily avoided.

As for the politicians and the idiot media, including the Fox News morons, they know this, but they want to deceive the American people, especially the Never Trumpers like nocalbert and other numbnuts on FR.

Breitbart said Trump will sign it.

I think McConnell threatened to slow-walk his judges to get confirmed, IMO.

Tom Shilue said he thinks Trump is still not 100% in favor of the bill but he cut a deal that he signs it and the GOP helps him with the NE and getting the wall built. It was Trump who mouthed off to Mitch according to Tom Shilue.

Last of the article: I could live with that assuming the poison pills were truly removed.

True. I agree with most of those comments. Except that yesterday Fox News was cheering for the bill to be signed. If they changed tune it was only this afternoon when it was released.

I don’t know. I don’t like this bill either. I’m just saying there’s a reason why Trump is signing it. Mitch holding up his judges could be a prime factor.

Judges are an iffy business to begin with. Most of the ones appointed by ‘conservative’ presidents end up be at least as liberal as the ones appointed by the liberal presidents.

Such a shame to sacrifice the country for a few judges who will likely not be on our side anyways.

Laura is trying to saving her media career which will not happen. Trump will appoint her to the Federal Bench, so she’ll be OK.

These a-holes never read ANYTHING that they vote on. I hate the GOP more than the DNC because at least we know what we get from those POS. I have no idea what the Republican Party represents anymore besides themselves and being the b*tches of the Democrat Party.

"McConnell has set Trump up intentionally."

Mitch and the gang of establishment Republicans have been doing this since Mr. Trump took office. When the President talked about "draining the swamp" I honestly don't think he had an inkling on how deep it is and how many of the alligators are members of the GOP.
