I went to University with a kid from a well-connected political family. This person spent their time pretending to be a hippie, and pretending to get high, when in fact they were in the library studying hard. This person of course become a lawyer and "inherited" a spot in the Democrat political firmament of their state.
Being from a completely obscure, nothing background myself, at the time, I simply couldn't understand their behavior. Isn't it rather people who spend their time getting high who are trying to convince others they are upstanding, sober individuals? It was a sort of fake-ness I didn't understand at the time.
Astute observations with content. I wonder if anyone did a movie of this phenomenon...oh wait there was the non fiction documentary called Animal House.
