At the time Virginias future political leaders put on blackface in college for fun, Dan Aykroyd wore it too in the hit 1983 comedy Trading Places.
Sports announcers of that time often described Boston Celtics player Larry Bird, who is white, as smart while describing his black NBA opponents as athletically gifted.
Such racial insensitivities ran rampant in popular culture during the 1980s, the era in which Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and the states attorney general, Mark Herring, have admitted to wearing blackface as they mimicked pop singer Michael Jackson and rapper Kurtis Blow, respectively.
Meanwhile, Chicago elected its first black mayor, Michael Jackson made music history with his Thriller album, U.S. college students protested against South Africas racist system of apartheid and the stereotype-smashing sitcom The Cosby Show debuted on network television.
It would be another 10 years before the rise of multiculturalism began to change Americas racial sensibilities, in part because intellectuals and journalists of color were better positioned to successfully challenge racist images, and Hollywood began to listen.
We are in a stronger position to educate the American public about symbols and cultural practices that are harmful today than we were in the 1980s, said Henry Louis Gates Jr., director of the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University.

They have weaponized the term "racist", labeled certain kinds of behavior and thought as racist, and selectively use the accusation to attack their enemies.
Hypocrite Whoopi Goldberg thought blackface was hilarious when her then lover, Ted Danson' wore blackface and Made "N Word" jokes at a Whoopi Roast in 1993.
The Roast of Whoopi Goldberg: A Look Back At Ted Dansons Blackface Performance
"May 18th, 2017
Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson made a lot of headlines back in the 90s but perhaps none were more hard-hitting as those that followed October 8th, 1993.
That Friday night, the two entertainers, who were recent co-stars and lovers, were in attendance at the Friars Club roast held at the New York Hilton Hotel ballroom.
Danson was roasting Goldberg. His makeup was blackface and his jokes included over a dozen uses of the n-word."
I am just curious what state year books are you looking at, I grew up in Georgia. This just didn’t happen when i was growing up.
The first time I had ever heard blackface was Meghan Kelly.
I was in high school when the black school was closed and they all came to our school.I saw the KKK come to town and they did not go after blacks. They came after one man that rode to work with my daddy. This man was a drunk, beat his wife and kids, left them without food, I knew because my mama would send me and daddy to check on them. This man did much better after that.
Everyone of my southern friends and I are looking at each other saying who does and or thought about doing this. Then I see other people saying oh its a southern thing, no its not.
Hey, what about imitating black people. In my Junior High, lots of us boys imitated Percy Sledge and other Motown artists. It was funny as hell.
Micheal Jackson was doing white face permanently and no one said a thing
Need pictures to decide.
In the 80’s I used to joke that I was Barry Whitebread. No blackface, just a poor renditionof a great R&B singer.
Probably - but honestly, I don’t understand how blackface in costume functions is racist. I didn’t happen in the circles I lived, but what is wrong with it??
People have expanded actual racism to include much too much.
Key statement right there. Before multiculturalism America was a better country.
Believe it or not, I do have a photo taken with a Kodak Brownie.
I was in Port Lavaca, TX. Not exactly Hawaii, but for young teenagers it’s all about the magic in your mind.
These are all New York State yearbooks (local NYC area HS and upstate College's) ... we would NEVER think about wearing 'blackface' or sporting KKK hoods, not even as a joke, especially NOT in a yearbook !!
My town is mostly of Italian, Irish, and German descent, with a good percentage of African-American descent ... it's a nice neighborhood, we all got along quite well with each other in the 60's, 70's & 80's ... until the Lefties started their SJW shit.
And no, it's not a "Southern Thing", it's a Leftie thing and always has been.
Anyway, I digress ... the main point being that here in New York none of us would ever DARE wear 'blackface' or dress up as a KKK Wizard in any shape or form, and ESPECIALLY not for a yearbook picture!
This Northam guy (D-VA) is full of it in his lame excuses !!!
Exactly, but that's not even the point ... Micheal Jackson was a HUGE star in the 80's, and the "Moon-Walk" was one of his famous trademarks.
Not to cut this Northam rat any slack, but if he did a "Moon-Walk" for a dance contest in the 80's, then so what ??? He was just doing what was a popular dance at the time, which doesn't make it 'racist' !
Sheesh, these SJW's are way out of control ....
