In some places in Europe churches had containers where a baby could be left while no one else was around.

Two or three weeks ago one of the people on "Finding Your Roots" was a woman of Sicilian and Calabrian ancestry. One of her ancestors had the surname D'Ignoti. It came from the fact that his birth notice in the parish records had him listed as d'ignoti--"of unknown parents." Evidently left at a church by an unmarried young woman.
