Congress close to a deal on border fencing, and Trump might take it
Washington Examiner ^ | 02/08/2019 | Susan Ferrechio

House and Senate negotiators are closing in on a possible border security agreement that would fund new technology, additional border patrol agents, and likely some kind of fencing in certain areas along the southern border.

There’s no mention of a wall in the deal, per orders of Democratic leaders who vehemently oppose it.

But President Trump seems to be more flexible to whatever the deal entails, Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby, R-Ala., divulged to lawmakers in a private lunch Thursday.

“I gave a report on meeting with the president and I thought things were on the positive trajectory as far as maybe concluding the funding,” Shelby said. “But we are not there yet.”

Shelby said Thursday afternoon that the next 72 hours would be critical if Democrats and Republicans are to reach a long-sought deal on border security that would also allow passage of seven spending bills and ensure full government funding by a Feb. 15 deadline.

“We’ve got serious negotiations going on,” Shelby said.

The main sticking point is how much money to provide for border barriers and what those barriers will look like.

Democrats appear willing to agree to funding for some new fencing in targeted areas as well as upgrades to existing barriers, they told the Washington Examiner.

The deal is likely to cover far fewer miles than Trump wants, however, and the barriers will be far less robust than the steel slat wall Trump favors.

Shelby would not disclose whether Trump would agree to less than the $5.7 billion he has requested for border barriers, or a wall, as he calls it. But he hinted Trump may be willing to make a deal on price.

I’m not reading anything in the excerpt that indicates a cave.

Sounds more like the enemedia, as usual, setting up a political posture that if or when a deal is not made, Trump will be blamed. In any case, the enemedia, by putting out these kind of stories beforehand, is messaging to Trump, to put pressure on him to cave.

No explicit indication that Trump/admin has changed their stance.

If a robust steel wall is offered, the Dims won’t take it, because that would keep their future votes out.

I'm okay with fencing, as long as it is 40+ feet tall and made from steel-reinforced concrete.

Trump, and Trump alone, has the entire Congress focused on border security, something they’ve avoided for decades.

Yet the crybabies and bitches are following their emaciated Bill Maher-loving goddess and crapping all over the man.

Pathetic losers

Excellent post, and exactly what I was thinking.

Trump is the only one fighting. And we’re going to abandon him if we don’t get our perfect wish fulfillment right away? What are we, emotional Democrats?

Politics is trench warfare. Trump is holding the line with a bayonet, and the rest of us are at home sucking on our mama’s teat.

Exactly.

All the people bitching about Trump are unwilling to get into the arena themselves.

Perhaps if we had more Trump-minded people running for office, Trump could get more done. But the whiners just like to bitch, and not do anything.

The least we can do for the President is give him our vote. Constructive criticism, helpful opinions are fine. Anyone threatening to not vote for him or crapping on his reelection chances can fuck off. I don’t even want to hear from you.

What was Trump's first cave?

Big beautiful wall became a fence and Mexico would pay for it and Hillary would be in jail and, and, and.

aquila, I don’t care if he “caves” and becomes a democrat, this man has given me two wonderful years at a great personal price for him. Nothing he does will turn me against these 24 months of being proud, happy and grateful for the time, even though it may be short-lived.

Ms Coulter is a spoiled brat, whom I used to respect.

All the preceding presidents put together have not given me, personally, what President Trump has.

If, for ONLY his exposure of the media, the ride was worth it.

“The rumors abound - and the concern trolls break out their worry beads......”

Frankly it’s why FR gets such a bad reputation as being a site full of concern trolls, geriatric whiners and shut-ins, and nevertrump dullards.

This article tells us not a thing and is nothing more than an Op-ed judging from the title alone. But damn if it doesn’t stop these idiots from screaming and gnashing their teeth.

You’re an old timer, so I’ll give you some props. But really, which choice is going to turn out best for you; fight alongside the President or take your ball and go home?

In reality? Hell No.

But the Ann Coulter Club on FR likes to pretend they are us, and thinks that making the most noise = speaking for the majority.
