prescribing opioids without a legitimate medical purpose could subject them to enforcement action, including criminal prosecution.

I am having to deal with the ramifications of this same policy in my state. I have pain 24/7 and am now attempting to deal with a pain clinic whose mission seems to be deny meds to all who darken their door. If this doesn’t work I guess I will have to purchase meds on the street.
If you have chronic pain I hope you have a doctor who has a set, if not welcome to world.
Short of CW2, the only real check on a rogue DOJ criminalizing medical practice and engaging in prosecutorial abuse is jury nullification. Prosecutors have to start losing cases when they go after doctors.
I went to h.s. with one of the doctors involved. I believe what a lot of people don’t think of is the type of work folks in our neck of the woods do for a living. Coal mining, logging, and construction are high risk jobs and anyone who spends a fair amount of time doing them will most likely get injured at some point. I am not talking a cut or bruise or pulled muscle but broken backs, bulging discs, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, arthritis of the spine, and these are just mine.
Folks need to consider this before they automatically think recreational drug use that escalated.

You are right. Dr. I went to high school with was arrested for prescribing to many pain meds. The feds seized his house, cars, airplane, boat, and all bank accounts and cash they could find. They also arrested his wife. He is now broke and has to depend on a public defender. His family is now destroyed and he has not been convicted of any crime.
having said that, when the govt goes after somebody, are they actually protecting and promoting someone else....
aka....the drug cartels.....no oxy prescriptions.....force the addicts to get it illegally or use heroin.....
