I hear that the pilot purchased the plane last month. 8th owner.
I will let you know..
That sounds like the pilot lost is way in the clouds. That plane should have never made sound for that long unless he was lost turning in the clouds.
He should have gone out of sound range pretty quick. That was a fast airplane.
Also sounds like he was very low, possibly scud running and got caught in the clouds.
Sad to hear. Condolences to the families.
Wow. That explains the hole in the roof a little better. Aircraft was oriented nose-down in a free fall.
I wonder if the fire was caused by a lighting strike. Looks like a pretty violent weather cell nearby. Case of get-there-itus?
My friend has been flying out of Fullerton AP...many, many years.
If he tells me anything...I will let you know.
Exceeded Vne (Velocity never exceed; wings came off) and possibly ‘blew’ engine; over-rev heard in the audio from the video of the driveway ...
Woah! That’s unbelievable video. That plane blew up bigly.
Been at that outdoor mall many times.
I don’t think that we had any lightning that day, thunder and lightning are very rare in SoCal and you tend to remember it.. we had some a day or two earlier but it wasn’t even raining much when the crash occurred. Mostly heavy clouds. I was outside looking at the smoke plume right after the crash and it was barely raining.
If you’ve been in the canyon long enough you remember that site when it was just Knowlwoods in an old converted farmhouse.
I remember driving out there for hamburgers with the family in the early 60’s. Imperial Highway was pure country.
Looks like the wing and engine tore off and went into the house causing the fire. My opinion means nothing but I used to pick up wrecks and have been flying small planes for 35 years and have over 17000 hours.
To me after seeing and hearing the sounds of it coming out of the clouds, quite a few things could have happened.
The gauges quit working and he lost control, but there are backup gauges, and/or the pilot was inexperienced and unqualified to fly that plane.
When I was listening to the sound of the crash, it sounded like he was lost and circling around. Normally the sound would have just went on by but like I said it was lingering/circling around.
Yorba Linda is between 2 mountainous areas. He was also low since you could hear the plane circling around. He might have also been worried about crashing into those mountains and distracted him from controlling the plane. Lots of factors.
Again RIP and condolences to the parties affected.
Not technically
Turbo charged piston engine as opposed to turbine jet engine
Those are just foothills near Yorba Linda. Nothing especially big where he was. Mountains are way off to the north.
Radar tracked him at 8,000 ft and then suddenly he nosed over. 75 yr old experienced pilot alone in the plane... he apparently radioed in an emergency so I guess that makes a heart attack or stroke an unlikely explanation for the crash.
He flew in from the south, some of my friends heard what they thought was a plane in trouble as he went over. And then the crash. I don’t think he was circling. He had been in clouds.
Did you listen to the sound video from the home on youtube?
I did listen to the sound and now having seen the second dash cam video it sure sound like the pilot overspend the aircraft and lost control. In that video that 414 is going way too fast and pointed down and appears to depart from normal flight as he maybe pulling up and ripped the wings off the plane. That is the point the fire begins. One source said he made an emergency call to the tower but that has not been confirmed by anyone. From higher quality audio recording close by he does sound like he did a 180 degree turn and the engines are way over revving or with an incorrect prop pitch setting. In the dash cam video his speed looks to be way over the G load limit for the plane.

There is a report in the LA Times stating the 75 year old pilot did call in an emergency at the point he reached @ 8,000 feet altitude and then nosed over. In another news report a witness said just as the 414 came out of the clouds the tail came off first. This could have been the point he was pulling out of the dive and overstressed the airframe. Once the tail came off and the plane departed flight laterally in an extreme G loading and still nose down the wings ripped off out board of the engines and the fuel caught fire. From there is was a ballistic ride to the ground.
Ditto that....Saddleback is talked about like a “mountain”...but it’s not.
