Extreme cold wreaks havoc on just about
everything. Door handles on conventional
vehicles freeze up. Water in fuel lines,
increased viscosity in engine oils,
weak or inadequate anti-freeze in engine
blocks, wipers freeze to windshields.
Cold is cold. Preventative maintenance
goes a long way in helping to alleviate
cold weather problems. Electric vehicles
have come a long way, but have a long
way to go before this gear head would
consider buying one. I would never buy
one under the pretense of doing my part
to save the planet.
Years ago, I did a lot of work in power plants and industrial sites burning residual fuel oil, aka “Bunker C.” At room temperatures, it froze solid, so everything was heated - tanks, pumps, filters, pipes. If any of your heating apparatus broke, the oil would freeze up. It was really nasty, high sulfur stuff left over after refineries took out the good lighter fractions from the crude.
The main reason being, on a Net/Net Basis it does absolutely nothing to save the planet, on top of that do you want a car made in a tent?
