I’ve noticed there are not that many sedans on the morning and evening commute just hordes of SUVS and PUs - both of which are expensive and burn a lot of gas compared to sedans.

Actually, most SUVs/Crossovers, are the size of sedans, and produce approximately the same MPGs as their counterpart sedans. IOW, SUVs are mostly the sedans of old with higher roofs. The SUV I drive gives me approximately 23.5 MPGs with city and highway driving combined. Recently, on a trip from Tampa to Orlando and back, I got 29 MPGs.

Also, with fuel prices having come down recently to levels that are very affordable, people are not caring about 'expensive' fuels, since, they're not around anymore. In fact, after cost-of-living adjustment, prices of fuels are more affordable than they were some 10-15 years ago.

Drive a Toyota sedan get 35-40 mpg so 29 mpg is a long way down. Thanks you, but no. And all the SUVs I see are much taller than my car. The PUs are almost the size of a semi these days. I’ll stick with the under $25K - you can have the $35-50K and up cars which fo me is just too much money for transportation. Old School here and money is money - affordable smordable - I’ll keep the difference and put it to better use than a hunk of overpriced, gas-guzzling, light metal and plastic.
