Although the FBI under J Edgar was known to illegally spy upon and blackmail key government figures, the FBI has outdone its past horrors.

Back during JE Hoover's reign, it would have been financially impossible to do the kind of surveillance/intel gathering on anyone other than key government or criminal figures.

These days, most surveillance/intel gathering is all automated.

I stopped trusting the police in the early 1980s. I stopped trusting the feds in the early 1990s. I have posted many times, going back years now: The police are not our friends.

Doesn't that really say more about our society as a whole and it's loss of morals rather than just the police or feds exclusively ? Where did these cops and feds come from ? Who were their mother's or father's ?
