True enough but Cotton Mather the most influential cleric of the time certainly made it clear Indians were Satan's imps and this mentality helped the exterminationist mindset that was pretty obvious in the Pequot War and Metacomet’s War. In any case while the palm for the first Indian massacre by English settlers seems to go to Lord Delaware in 1610 in Virginia the Wessagusset affair in 1623 kicked of similar activities in New England. English settlers whether Puritan or so called cavaliers just wanted the dam* Indians gone unless they could be enslaved. The Spaniards had so many Indians that even after the epidemic cycle of the 1530-1550 period they couldn't kill them all and they were still so numerous that they were a good labor source. There were a few attempts by English speaking whites to convert and ‘civilize’ the stone age natives but the Paxton Boys were more in keeping with general attitudes towards the Indians.

Cotton Mather and his Puritan brethern were learned bigots. Mather was the most influential religious figure in New England for a century until Jonathan Edwards and Isaac Backus, who were certainly a great improvement.

The English at the settler level wanted the Indians gone, how that didn't care. The Spanish and French, for different reasons , had to try and find some sort of modus to deal with the natives.The Inquisition had nothing to do with the natives. In Mexico and I suppose Peru it was focused on heretics and crypto Jews. The current Papa Loco is irrelevant to discussing the period from 1517 to 1800 or so.

Where the h*ll did that come from. Opechancanough directed a general attack on the British settlements in 1622, but I assure Jamestown was not destroyed. As to Ms. Dare, nobody knows what happened to Raleigh's colony, although it seems likely they merged with the Lumbees. Heather Locklear is a good example of the ‘Fighting Lumbees’ as they are locally called. A blond, blue eyed Indian with a temper and a hard time handling liquor.

Ah, but the Shrine is in Anacostia, which was part of Maryland before the formation of the District of Columbia. And when, in the later 17th Century, the local American Indian Tribes from what are now St Mary's, Charles, and Prince Georges Counties, packed up and threatened to move west with the Senecas, who were migrating from the Carolinas to Western Pennsylvania, the Governor of the Proprietary Colony of Maryland sent a delegation to implore them to stay. Most of them did stay, and their descendants are living in Southern Maryland to this day. Maryland was founded as a Proprietary Colony of the Calvert family as a refuge for Catholics.
