They were targeted by CNN, MSNBC and the rest, who lied about them in a way that would stir up controversy and inevitably violence. They should be sued out of existence. They may claim they were only repeating what others have said, but they did the real damage of broadcasting it. When you shoot someone, you can’t blame the gun manufacturer.
Kentucky has punitive damages. Hope the kids sue.

That's not much of a defense because of the size of their audience.
Broadcasting something across the country that was heard whispered by others is no defense against the accusations that their actions caused real, identifiable damages to those (the students) involved.
If they don't already know this, their lawyers are reminding them.
This may, just may, be an event which brings to an end their spurious form of journalism.
