That may be part of the reason, but I think it's mainly hatred of Christianity - along with egotism - that inspires pro-Muslim sentiment on the left. By supporting Islam, they are virtue-signaling their imagined tolerance, even as they try to push Christianity out of the public square and into the closet. For some strange reason, they think they can control and co-opt Islam just as they've co-opted liberal Christianity.
