As the longest government shutdown in American history lurches toward its fifth week, a grim but growing consensus has begun to emerge on Capitol Hill: There may be no way out of this mess until something disastrous happens.
This is, of course, not a sentiment lawmakers are eager to share on the record. But in interviews this week with congressional staffers on both sides of the aisle (whom I granted anonymity in exchange for candor), I heard the same morbid idea expressed again and again.
The basic theoryexplained to me between weary sighs and defeated shrugsgoes like this: Washington is at an impasse that looks increasingly unbreakable. President Donald Trump is dug in; so is Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Democrats have public opinion on their side, but the president is focused on his conservative base. For a deal to shake loose in this environment, it may require a failure of government so dramatic, so shocking, as to galvanize public outrage and force the two parties back to the negotiating table.

Today is day 28 of the shutdown.
Am I correct in my understanding that after 30 days Trump can permanently furlough the 800,000 ‘non-essential’ workers?
If so, there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth when 800,000 deadbeats are told that their ‘non-essential’ job has been permanently eliminated.
A source told me public opinion is on Trump’s side.
Trump has out foxed the Dems again. If the shutdown goes more than 30 days he can fire non-essential employees.
That is my understanding as well. And that is most likely the reason Trump pulled Pelosi’s air ticket so she could not claim she was out of the country on day 30-—which by the way is two days from now.
I agree, we lost the Republic officially on Usurpation Day, January 20, 2009, but the series of events that led to that began on January 20, 1989 when the first globalist took office ands started the fundamental transformation of the country into North Mexico.
BS. They have a rabid, far, far left base on their hands now that is absolutely filled with hate for POTUS. They have no way out if they wish to retain their seats. Don't think the old white people of the Dem party didn't sit up and take notice when AOC was elected. They have to the best they can to obstruct which will mean the Gov't stays shut down. POTUS will just use emergency powers and get the wall built all while employing RIF to give the government a haircut.

thats my concise and in context response to the op - perhaps you suffer shutdown fatigue? thanks for your input!
Translation:
The people without guns are MAD at President Trump.
Botox destroys brain cells.
This is the first time that many DC FedGov ‘workers’ have ever been laid off. I hope this humbles them and teaches them what life is like in the real world.
yep.
The disaster already happened on November 6.
Now, things just have to follow their pre-ordained paths until Trump is removed or until he takes power.
And it is likely that 3-5 pounds gets through for every pound interdicted.
“The disaster already happened on November 6.”
Agreed. I was surprised things weren’t closer, but since the election it’s become clear there was widespread voter fraud as well.
It’s very sad that so many Americans are so detached from reality they thought a Dem majority in the House was a good idea...
I wasn't.
I predicted D +40 House, R +4 Senate, and came pretty close. I didn't realize McSally was as bad as she was (I had her winning), and I thought we would get Montana.
I took incredible sh*t here for the D +40 prediction, but there are still a lot of Republicans around here who do not realize how hated the GOP is in most of the country.
The only thing normal people hate more than Democrats is Republicans. IF the GOP had backed Trump's play, or IF Trump had ditched the GOP by July 2017 and run 435 MAGA candidates, it would have been a bit better, but not much.
There are two things the people really want - a secure southern border, and National Health Care.
The Democrats will give them one of two. In power for two years, not only did the GOP give them nothing, it was obvious to all but the blind that the GOP had no intention of giving them anything.
Something beats nothing every time.
Good luck with that.
