I believe they just mean her recovery from surgery is progressing as expected - which is still a dire injury nonetheless.
Her general vigor and fitness are bound to decline sharply at her age, even as her surgical wounds heal shut - with limited movement, sharply restricted breathing, and likely opiate painkillers.
