I chose my career after reading a “Times” article on the “disaster” of building a nuclear reactor near a fault zone in California.

First year in school I learned that EVERYWHERE in California is near a fault zone.

Still love my job. 17 years into it I ended up working with an old-timer. Going through and organizing his stuff to get his business back up and going, I came across an old report of his.

Cross-sections of the faults near that reactor - the work done before the place was built, in order to take them into account for the design!

Fifteen years later I visited him often as he was in hospice, waiting to die. I told him about the job I was working on - they were taking down an old dam, but needed more detail on the geology.

“Hell - I did the work there before they put the dam in!” He then proceeded to tell me (from his bed where he would pass a few weeks later) all about the geology of the area.

By the way - in his last days he would wake up briefly and mumble things. He said there were wonderful rock outcrops in Heaven. And beer! At the time I thought he was just delirious. However, the more I have learned and thought about it, I actually believe that he is correct.
