Are you aware that one of the newspapers suggested they use the guns of Fort Sumter against the confederates?
Philadelphia Press, January 15, 1861
" It would be proper, we suppose, to prohibit coast-wise trade to and from the ports of South Carolina, whilst she is in her present attitude of armed defiance of the United States. In the enforcement of the revenue laws, the forts become of primary importance. Their guns cover just so much ground as is necessary to enable the United States to enforce their laws."
D@mn copperheads! :)
And in what manner would their response deal with the loss of their protectionist laws? How were they going to make up that money and those profits?
Seriously, this is the realm of hypotheticals on top of more hypotheticals, none of it tied closely to what was happening or said.
You are probably aware of this, but in case you are not, let me convey it to you.
People act on what they believe, and it doesn't necessarily have to be true or correct. The Northern newspapers clearly believed the South was a serious economic threat to them, and if they believed that, so too is it likely that many powerful men in the North also believed it as well.
Power Barons do not normally fall on the ground and suck their thumb while bewailing the awful fate that has been visited upon them. Their normal response is to figure out how they can stick a metaphorical knife blade between the ribs of whomever they see as the source of the threat.
This is why these men are Alphas. They don't tolerate threats, they actively seek to destroy threats.
And they will act on fear, whether it be well grounded or not.
Your repetitive responding to respond in order to waste as much time as possible while failing to read and/or just claiming any source that is inconvenient for your arguments is automatically untrue, has likewise come to an end. Buh Bye.
8th attempt.
"The problem with this lofty rhetoric of dying to make men free was that in 1861 the North was fighting for the restoration of a slaveholding Union. In his July 4 message to Congress, Lincoln reiterated the inaugural pledge that he had 'no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with slavery in the States where it exists.'" (McPherson, Ordeal By Fire, p. 265)
The same Congress that imposed Reconstruction on the South after the war also imposed racist policies on the American Indians "The same Congress that devised Radical Reconstruction . . . approved strict segregation and inequality for the Indian of the West." (Catton, editor, The National Experience, p. 416)
No, it’s also a delusion in FLT-bird-brain’s cranium!
9th attempt. ;’}
FLT-bird: ***”This quote about the tariff is from C R Vaughan, DD, Editor, Discussions by Robert Dabney, DD, LLD, Volume IV, Hamsburg VA Sprinkle Publications, 1979, pp 87-100 quoting the memoirs of Col John B Baldwin, a member of the VA Peace Commission.”***
The problem with Baldwin’s story is that he didn’t tell it until war’s end at which time Confederates were furiously destroying their own documents and concocting revisions to explain away what they did.
So historians discount it and Baldwin’s suggestion that Lincoln was concerned about losing not just miniscule revenues from Charleston, but all $50+ million annual Federal revenues.
None of the accounts I’ve read include reports from either Baldwin or those Maryland folks who visited Lincoln with similar results.
Instead they emphasize what the record shows: Lincoln’s concern to hold Fort Sumter, even if it meant military conflict because to do otherwise would be to lose the Union.
Lincoln was determined not to start war, but also not to shy away if it came.
There you go misstating it again. Here you are wrong in two different ways.
No, Lincoln wasn't worried about the "miniscule" revenues from Charleston, he was concerned with the more important problem of if he lets Charleston get away with it, the other ports will demand the same and now he has a *BIG* problem.
Secondly, the only reason the revenues at Charleston were then "miniscule", was because of the jiggered laws that funneled virtually all the import traffic into New York. Without those laws, the revenue that could be collected at Charleston would have greatly increased.
Lincolns concern to hold Fort Sumter, even if it meant military conflict because to do otherwise would be to lose the Union.
Because it is so important to preserve a Union in which people must be forced to remain in it by guns pointed at their backs.
The Coasts hate us. California/New York, they both *HATE* us, and want us to die. They are the wealthy urban elite Liberals, and today their gripe isn't slavery, it's how backwards we are because we want to adhere to Christian principles instead of adopting Abortion, Homosexuality, Gun Control, and third world "Diversity" that looks suspiciously like welfare parasites some of which have Jihad syndrome.
That'll be his next attempt. Last time he tried for literally weeks to get me to engage with him after I'd left the thread. Poor guy obviously doesn't have much in his life to want to spend all day every day in these threads whenever the subject comes up.

9th attempt.
Or you could read Dabney's document itself, or is that too much like work?
MEMOIR OF A NARRATIVE RECEIVED OF COLONEL JOHN B. BALDWIN
You just can't help yourself can you?
I tried, I really did. But one can only put up with so much falsehoods before responding.
I tried, I really did. But one can only put up with so much falsehoods before responding. Funny. I feel that way about everything you post - yet I don't feel some kind of compulsive need to keep going back and forth with you.
Kinda like how I don't know why I'm responding to your drivel. Lord knows you don't have a single intelligent thought to contribute.
Your source was wrong but you still cling to it. Not at all surprising.
My source was right and you're obsessed and cannot help yourself. Not at all surprising.
bird brain is comfortable with a 4th-hand reference - as long as it fits his agenda. That says it all.
I’m afraid its like casting pearls before swine with these three Leftist morons. For them its all about centralized power and crooked Northeastern business interests...the same ones then as now. They hate the values the Republic was founded on - decentralized power, government by consent of the governed, limited government. They really haven’t changed much in 150+ years.
