My 74 year old sister and husband live in Portland.

About a year ago, a city employee knocked on their front door. Because they live in what used to be county (and is now city), they have a larger than typical city lot. The employee explained that their larger lot is perfect for a tiny home for vagrants, excuse me, homeless. He said she should share some of her bounty (his word) for having such a large lot. He also said their property is perfect for a neighborhood garden, based on his survey of the lot (yup. He peeked over her fence)

The city would build the tiny house. If my sister would allow vagrants to live there for 3 years rent free, the city would gift her the tiny house.

She asked him a few saliant questions - who manages the crime and litter that comes from the vagrant “community” that comes from these tiny houses?

She is liable and responsible, he said. But that is fair trade off for a free tiny house.

So she asked if her property taxes would go up as she now had an additional structure on her property. Yes, but minimally, the employee replied.

So after 5 seconds of thought, she told the employee to get the Hell off her property!!

That’s Portland, folks!

Well what the city employee was giving to her was an offer, a suggestion if you will, not (yet) confiscation.

I wonder when a new law will pass making his offer COMPULSORY...

If she had shot the bastard, I would not vote to convict.
