California Rings in the New Year With 1,016 New Laws

Of the 1,217 bills that reached California Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk in 2018, he signed 1,016 new laws and vetoed 201 – a record-high for Brown’s last two terms in office.

Of the new laws going into effect in California in 2019, some are important and some are oddities: A plastic straw ban, making surfing the official California sport, banning the use of refrigeration chemicals, additional gun control requirements, requiring women on Boards of Directors of publicly traded companies… and 1,011 more.

Here’s the good, the bad, and the ugly:

Vegan Meals for Prison Inmates

California is the first state in the nation to offer prison inmates an all-vegan menu, effective January 1, 2019. SB 1138 requires prisons, hospitals and healthcare facilities to offer plant-based meals to prisoners and patients. The bill passed the Legislature unanimously.

Restaurants and Plastic Straw Ban

AB 1884 bans full-service restaurants from automatically giving customers plastic straws, effective January 1, 2019. Dine-in restaurants will only be allowed to provide plastic straws at customers’ request. Businesses will receive a warning for their first two violations, then a $25 fine per day for each subsequent violation, up to $300 annually, according to bill language.

SB 1192 now requires restaurants that advertise kid’s meals to include water or unflavored milk as the default beverage, because according to state Assemblyman Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento), “Kids’ meals shouldn’t come with a side order of diabetes, obesity or cardiovascular disease.” Customers can still order other drink options.

Nothing unusual about this. CA has been making an average of 1000 new laws per year going back more than 30 years. It’s the most legislated state but I bet NY and NJ aren’t too far behind it.

But dog food has meat byproducts like hair, skin, hooves and intestines! I think those are no-nos to a vegan.

It would be interesting for someone with the research time to create a graph of CA laws and quality of life vs time.

It would undoubtedly show the first line ascending and the second descending.

It was once a mecca. Now, it’s an outhouse.

Adios, Mexifornia. We knew you well. Once.

Banning straws? The Cali RATS will make their state a sanctuary for illegals and keep their border wide open making it a dangerous environment for their citizens, but those same citizens have to ask for a freaking plastic straw in restaurants because the left is worried about the outdoor environment! That is just straight up f**ked up! The left destroying everything they touch!

Bread and water is vegan! Banning straws? What will the gay community use for “Shrimping?”

Incredible... The Constitution no longer exists in Ca. The state now basically owns and controls everything. This is the Communism coming to the rest of the Nation soon.

What are they going to do about the straws? Create a straw police or offer rewards for evidence?

Vehicle registration is already too high, how is anyone going to go get a job if they can’t afford to register a car?

They are going completely beyond all rationality with this stuff.

So, you just train your waiters and waitresses to ask patrons, when taking drink order, whether they would like a plastic straw. If they say yes then you’ve complied with the law.

When I was a college kid in Los Angeles decades ago, rented apartments did NOT come with refrigerators.

You actually had to go somewhere and rent them, and then have them delivered to your apartment.

It was a hassle.

New laws always sound like a good idea until somebody has to enforce them.

This is so true in many ways but CA does still have its geographical charms. Even the leftists can't take that away. The ocean, mountains, lakes, and desert are all still there. The over population, crazy cost of living, and tens of thousands of restricting laws have made it an unpleasant place to live for someone like me though.

How do they intend to enforce them when you have illegal aliens murdering their law enforcement officers?

How many points did Ca hit you with? What will your insurance rates go up to for the next 5 years because of these points?

I lived in So Calif from Feb 1964 to May 1993.

I moved into an apartment in Nov 1965 & had to buy a refrigerator & other furniture.

I bought my first house in May 1966. I moved all the furniture & that refrigerator with me to the new house.

I have lived in 2 other houses since -—

AND that refrigerator is now in my garage here in N Nevada, and still works just fine. It is now OVER 53 years old and I use it constantly. I also have a 1972 upright freezer that is in my kitchen & it works fine. Use it constantly, also.
