Biden in 2020? Allies Say He Sees Himself as Democrats' Best Hope

Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. is in the final stages of deciding whether to run for president and has told allies he is skeptical the other Democrats eyeing the White House can defeat President Trump, an assessment that foreshadows a clash between the veteran Washington insider and the more liberal and fresh-faced contenders for the party's 2020 nomination.

Many Democratic voters, and nearly all major Democratic donors, are keenly interested in Mr. Biden’s plans because of their consuming focus on finding a candidate who can beat a president they believe represents a threat to American democracy. But there is also a rising demand in the party for a more progressive standard-bearer who reflects the increasingly diverse Democratic coalition.

Mr. Biden would instantly be the early front-runner if he ran, but he would have to bridge divides in a primary that would test whether Democrats are willing to embrace a moderate white man in his 70s if they view him as the best bet to oust Mr. Trump.

"He has the best chance of beating Trump, hands down," said Senator Tom Carper of Delaware, Mr. Biden's longtime friend and former colleague. "On a scale of one to 10, that's probably about a 12 for us."

This will be fun. He is the polling front runner so it's certain he will get in the race, given political ego would mandate it. The ONLY question will be if the anxious young socialists allow it and don't attack him for his age and color. The Dems are extremely good at party unity, but somehow my gut tells me the young wacko socialists are going to rebel as they want to be seen as revolutionaries, and revolutionaries don't support 70+ year old White men of any Party.

Exactly! I'm sick of seeing Biden called a buffoon or a perv, even though both are true, when he's really an evil scumbag for many reasons, but this one in particular for me. As always, the same media who can find an overdue library book of the President from when he was in fifth grade but cannot seem to find a story from their own archives, are complicit.

Joe Biden is the most disgraceful man to hold the office of Vice President and that's saying a lot when your competition is the vile LBJ. More people should be aware of why.
Biden used the tragedy of the accident in 1972 that killed his first wife and daughter to blood libel the truck driver involved, Curtis Dunn, for political gain. Not content with getting what would be tremendous sympathy for such a loss and benefiting politically in an unavoidable but understandable manner, Biden had to make sure he would really benefit by claiming Dunn drank his lunch that fateful day instead of eating it. Biden knew the compliant media would run with his story, but just to make sure he could maximize the lie and not be refuted, he waited until after Dunn died in 1999 to tell his monstrous falsehood.

This is beyond even the usual low limits of politicians. It's one thing to work the sympathy angle of your first wife's death, but it's quite another to go the extra mile to blood libel someone just to be sure you maximize the drama. To this day, even though you'll stunningly note that the story is from CBS News, no one ever brings this up to Biden. Dan Qualyle cannot escape e on the end of potato hell, but Biden still gets glowing mention as a Presidential contender and regular guy in the media and sometimes here on Freerepublic.

I think he probably has the best chance to win the nomination of the Democratic party, who else have they got?

My opinion is that the Democrat Party in 2020 is incapable of nominating a white male. All of the usual offended victim groups feel that the nomination should be theirs. Even now you start to find howls of protest arising from minorities and feminists whenever a white guy's name is raised as the potential nominee.

I met Biden once in the ‘70s. It was when we were all young liberals, and he appeared to be our next champion. I found that He had the most remarkable personality of anyone I have ever met. Within two seconds you hated him. Hate isn’t strong enough, you detested him. He was the most pompous, vain, two-faced blowhard, phony you could possibly imagine. Seriously, it doesn’t take more than a few seconds to get the measure of the man. Oddly, that never comes across in the media.
