THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HARRY WARREN

SUMMER STOCK

Harry had experienced his greatest success at Warner Brothers, and many of his songs for that studio took up residence in the songbook. His jump to Fox produced a smaller quantity of successes but great quality. His jump to MGM produced one major hit, but then things went downhill. From 1946 to 1949 Harry wrote songs that fit well within the MGM musicals of the day but didn’t catch on. Then in 1950 he came back with this classic Judy Garland and Gene Kelly show.

“DIG DIG DIG FOR YOUR DINNER”

That’s Phil Silvers under that toupe in this clip from the movie, years before he became a TV star as MSG Ernest T. Bilko. The minor key tune for this effort with the Mack Gordon lyrics is a throwback to the Thirties.
