Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Suggests Super Wealthy be Taxed Up to 70% to Fund ‘Green New Deal’

by Colby Hall | Jan 4th, 2019, 8:13 am

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sat with Anderson Cooper for an upcoming 60 Minutes interview set to air this Sunday, a portion of which has been released as a promotion. In the released segment, Ocasio-Cortez reveals how exactly she suggests paying for the environmental agenda known as the “Green New Deal” — with remarkably higher tax rates for the super wealthy.

Ocasio-Cortez suggests in the clip that in her esteem, people should be doing more to pay their “fair share.” When Cooper pressed on how she could possibly pay for the deal, she pointed to the progressive tax rate system in the 1960s, explaining that if you earn 0 to $75,000 a year, you would only pay 10% or 15% in income tax.

She continued:

“But once you get to the tippie tops, on your $10 millionth, sometimes you see tax rates as high as 60% or 70%. That doesn’t mean all $10 million are taxed at an extremely high rate. But it means that as you climb up this ladder, you should be contributing more.”

Cooper replied that she was proposing a “radical agenda.”

“If that’s what radical means, call me a radical,” she said.

Someone should tell this jackass that income is not wealth, it is a means to wealth if used properly.

Sounds very close to what François Hollande did in France; his top marginal tax rate was 75 percent, and it caused a big exodus of the highest earners.

Wow, I suspect she didn’t run that through her head to see what it sounded like before speaking.

AOC's views are perfectly in-line with the base of the Democratic Party.

Seems reasonable.

And in that vein, Congresspeople should have
one organ removed every 5 years they profit/serve
given to a child (eye, skin, liver, or kidney).

When Democrats say “fair share” they really mean 100%.

So did she ask Cooper if he was progressive enough to only keep 30% of what he earns and give the rest to “society”? I would have LOVED to hear his response.

Otto Von Bismark said, “Politics is the art of the possible.”

What does the phrase “the art of the possible” mean?
The original phrase is “Politics is the art of the possible”, which means, “It’s not about what’s right or what’s best. It’s about what you can actually get done”. It’s associated with Realpolitik, a political philosophy of setting pragmatism over your ideological goals. Getting everything you want is impossible, and often, you have to severely compromise in order to get anything you want at all. But in the end, refusing to compromise means you get nothing whatsoever.

The term “art of the possible” is sometimes generalized in the sense of avoiding perfectionism. The goal is to get something that is good enough and move on rather than being driven into complete immobility by a desire to be perfect.

AOC is so far out of her league that she won’t get even a bit of what she wants. For the most part, she is probably scaring the daylights out of other Democratic politicians. It will be interesting to see what her compatriots do to her or for her. I am guessing they will sideline her.

IF, and it’s a BIG IF she supports a 10% tax rate on the lowest income levels, and 70% rate on anything over $10mil, it’s a trade I’m willing to make.

Not for her “Bad Deal”, but for a restructure of the tax system.

Make everyone pay taxes on every single penny. Nothing and nobody exempt.

Of course she’s dumb as a rock and didn’t mean what she said. And likely didn’t even know the current state, the state in the 60’s, nor the implications of the words she spoke.
