I agree with you, the ads and videos are a nuisance and they ask you to disable an ad blocker if you are using one. But in fairness, how do they manage to keep their website open? There are only two ways: selling merchandise, or through advertising. Donations are a third method, but you rarely see the request. More and more sites are restricting page views and asking you to subscribe for a minimal fee. Eventually, we will all be asked to pay for access to all sites as they cannot survive without income. It is just a matter of time.

As I said I have no problem at all with the advertising in principle. It’s the fact that they’re so stupid and continue to make the advertising so annoying and tasteless. A good web marketing firm is going to tell you that carousels and all that animation get no results in terms of advertising a product. Yet these people build their websites and totally ignore the advice of the professionals. I know because I deal with that.

I had a marketing firm tell me they always recommend that their clients not use carousels and automatically running animated ads. Their clients insist on doing it. The irony is that the advertisers are paying for nothing. The ads are totally ineffective because people do not look at them. I have read trade industry articles pointing out the total ineffectiveness of carousels and slideshows.

This also tells me that the advertisers are not doing their due diligence on the way their ads are presented and the effectiveness of the ads. The research is out there in the industry and yet they get a woody at all the cool stuff you can do technically with no consideration as to whether it actually works. Again this is Corporate America groupthink stupidity.
