Except this isn’t a Bob Dylan song. Same name as the song Dylan wrote in 1973, but Rod Stewart wrote this one in 1988. There is, however, an interesting connection between the two versions:

Memory is a strange thing, in that one can retain, in the subconscious, facets that he may not connect or remember to past events. That likely is what occurred here?
I always thought the lyrical differences were attributable to Rod including later stanzas of the song, but in a different order. Thank you for pointing this out to me.
