I used to live on a country highway. The trash that ended up in front if my house was primarily beer cans, crumpled cig packs, lottery tickets, McDonald wrappers and Dunkin Donut cups.

I had a very good picture in my mind of who the kinds of people who littered were.

CITY PEOPLE. 95% of the problems in this country come from the city culture and mentality.

Last time I saw a park ranger in a National Forest - he was wearing a plate carrier and carrying an M4. I guess he expected Red Dawn in Virginia.

It would actually be interesting to see a study that correlated trash to the location, type and clientele of the park. The NPS probably has very good anecdotal knowledge of this but may be inhibited by the PC gods from being too explicit. Most of my visits to the National Parks are to Civil War battlefields. I've not been out in the last week but I'd be surprised if anyone is littering at Antietam or Spottsylvania or Gettysburg. Overflowing trash cans might pose an issue in a few places.

Heavily trafficked commuter roads that cut through parks (e.g. Manassas, Chancellorsville) pose one sort of issue, but the bigger issue would be which parks attract pigs, and why.

Parks dominated by day trippers vs. parks that attract campers, who may be disinclined to pack their garbage out, would be another issue.

I once watch a black guy walk out of a convenience store with a bag of food and a drink.

That's an urban underclass issue, but I doubt that it much affects the national parks. The slightly politically incorrect, but true, NPS lament is that "black people don't go to national parks." That's obviously an exaggeration, but there's a lot of truth to it; black folks are very noticeably underrepresented at most national parks. I'm guessing that the primary offenders are young adults who go to the parks to party and don't want to clean up after their drunken debauch. Parks in close proximity to major metro areas would be especially at risk. In addition, at heavily used parks, a lot of trash will be left at waste receptacles that aren't being emptied. This will overflow pretty fast.

Rand Abbott, a volunteer at the park, told the Times that he has tried to talk people out of littering and other illegal activity but said that 70 percent of the people he encounters “are extremely rude.”

In other words, it's just business as usual in California like in San Francisco, except they haven't started shitting in the street's yet. So what are they complaining about?
Why don't they just shut the parks down? Plenty of state run parks everywhere.

Em concerned about the bears in Yellowstone not being fed. Also who will be feeding the elk in Rocky Mountain National Park?

I call BS

People who throw out their trash on road sides are inferior and generally do not visit National Parks

Joshua Tree National Park has been a famous spot to go party since the 60’s. Used to be bikers back when, who actually did a good job of self policing themselves. Now the partiers who have annexed it into their “territory” are gangsters from the Coachella and Indio area. Being rude is the last of this guy’s true concerns with these visitors.

People were littering and rude before the shutdown.

Congress critters should have stayed in Washington and worked through the holidays to end the rudeness crisis instead of going home to vacation.

City people are 🐖's. Mostly anyway. I lived and worked in the city in the 90's and the bad neighborhoods are the dirty ones. I saw a lady throw a fist full of lottery tickets to the wind at a gas station. I can vividly remember that being the last straw. I was back in the country in 2001 and only worked in the city till 05' thank the Lord.

I live on a river now and have to put up with urbanites in the summer. It can be funny to watch. Mostly it’s a sad window into what our society has become. A lot of cussing littering and tresspassing.
I have had to put up crazy looking stay off signs to keep people from camping littering and other things I can’t mention. Then they turn around and cuss me for not letting them do this on my own property.
It is going to be a ugly war when the time comes.

I suspect that most of the people causing trouble are NOT USA citizens.

It’s the “socialist” mentality that has become normal in the cities. They have the perception that all lands are public lands to be accessed and abused as they like. The concept of respecting private property just is not in their minds anymore.

We deal with this also daily in our rural area. Even fences and posted signs don’t do any good anymore and law enforcement is worthless. Did they take anything? did they damage any permanent structures? If not... then it’s a civil issue on private property and we can’t do anything about it.

It is now almost impossible to charge someone with trespassing because of this same mentality. But yet, if they injure themselves on your property you are liable.

It’s a mental illness. I would live in a tent in the country before I would live in a free mansion in the city.

I saw a ranger out and about yesterday in the NC mountains.

They must not all be furloughed...

Based on evidence at the end of major events in Washington, D. C., and elsewhere, the trash is being left by progressives and other leftists. Not by conservatives.
