The trouble started in early 2017 when Relotius arrived to profile a rural Midwestern community in a county that had voted for Trump in the 2016 presidential race. The idea, Der Spiegel later said, was to give readers better insight into Americans.

It was a hate piece against conservative Americans... we’re lucky it was vetted at all. In the US the corrupt assh*le would have won a Pulitzer...
Dear der speigel:
If you weren’t born and raised here with conservative values, you will never understand.
Now, buzz off.
I suspect huge lawsuits to follow.

PS: Don't make us come over there and kick your asses again!
This challenge to the timeline for Spiegel started around 90 days after original publishing. There’s a fairly long list of challenges that came up (I seem to remember like 20 different things that were listed).
So Spiegel went to the photographer who accompanied this guy, and he kinda hinted the limited interviews to equal what was written. I think Spiegel then went to this guy in mid-summer of this year, and presented the ‘evidence’ and asked him to answer them. He couldn’t, but that delayed this until Christmas week....so this could hopefully be missed by half the regular Spiegel readers.
But it’s not really over because other articles he wrote (maybe sixty over his employment period) are being checked out. There’s another charge over inserting his own personal bank account as the ‘help-the-orphans’ story he did from six to twelve months ago. Spiegel says they are going to do a civil court action, but I think they will drop the effort in three or four months.
All of this simply draws questions about numerous stories they’ve used since the US election....done in an anti-US slant. More of the stories may be examined and pulled back.
I should note this....the type of readers who pick up Spiegel are typically university-educated Germans who claim to be intellectuals, and they often cite Spiegel as ‘factual evidence’ in their presentations or arguments. Regular Germans (working-class) don’t read Spiegel.
Two time world champs in World War campaigns.
Oh, kind of like using articles from the nyt as “evidence”. Got it. LOL!
The bit about how it’s the home of Bullwinkle J. Moose and Rocky the Flying Squirrel should have set off some red flags...
This phenomenon is not restricted to Der Spiegel, most American publications have done the same. Only the most egregious examples are caught and exposed, modern day journalists are enabled to do this and are just cautioned to make an effort to avoid getting caught.
Especially since it’s common knowledge that Rocky is from Pottstown, PA.
They never could have gotten away with writing a piece with this level of hate and lies IF it had been about a liberal city. They were able to write this level of hatred because of the liars and haters in OUR press paved the way.

You will note that you cannot find ANY of the anti-Trump articles in question, other than the Fergus one, on Google. Wiped clean...
Rocky & Bullwinkle are from Frostbite Falls.
My wife has a ton of relatives in Fergus Falls. I could have cleared this up in an hour.
This is flyover country, after all.
