U.S.-allied Syrian Kurds, in the wake of America’s decision this week to withdraw its military forces from Syria, are faced with the prospects of making a pact with the Iranian and Russian-backed regime of Bashar al-Assad to repel a prospective attack by Turkish forces. Vowing to ultimately clear U.S.-allied Kurdish groups from Syria, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan...“Of course, this is not an open-ended waiting period,” he warned, adding, "In the next months, we will see an operational style aimed at removing the YPG [Kurdish People’s Protection Units militia]..."

Looks like I missed this one a few days ago.

If the Kurds spend some time with Assad's and Putin's people, they will turn against Israel and the U.S.

The question is were they ever really for the US or Israel? They do what it takes to survive when you are in a position like they have always been. With the possible exception of Israel that is how it is in the Middle East.

“If the Kurds spend some time with Assad’s and Putin’s people, they will turn against Israel and the U.S. “

The politics of the region is a witches brew of self-destruction. Assad made a deal with the devil by allowing Iran into his tent. Iran’s presence ensures the eventual doom of the Alawite faith. No other religion or sect is acceptable to Iran’s Shia government. Assad reached out while drowning and seized the only hand he could feel, Iran’s. So, any deal by any side in Syria is, at best, temporary.

The bizarre thing is, Assad winning is probably the best of all the bad alternatives. Frankly, I think the US should step out of the fray. Support the Kurds as much as possible, and try to stymie Iran and Turkey so that neither side has a clear path to victory. The US should pursue its national interest and I don’t see losing men and treasure in that region, in pursuit of unclear goals, as part of that interest. This is Obama’s war. And, what, exactly was Obama’s foreign policy? You could write a PhD thesis on the subject and you’d conclude that if he had one, it changed almost daily.

Let them turn to the Russians. The reality is that we can’t protect the Kurds while they are fighting both Iraq and Turkey. The reality is that we can’t befriend both Turkey and the Kurds. They hate each other. And as much as we dislike the current Turkish regime, they are in NATO.

We need to get out of Syria. Its just not a place that we have friends. Our spies are in their fooling around. There are no good guys in Syria, and there are lots of bad guys. We have no end game. So lets let the power struggle figure things out. Then we can deal with the winner no matter who that may be. It can never be the US.

“Just as well”

For sure. An alliance of convienence no doubt. But, aren’t they all? And temporary for sure. The classic example I suppose was the US / USSR alliance during WWII.

The Kurds have lived under Assad’s rule long before we got involved. If Erdogan has his way there may not be anymore Kurds.

I thought the YPG Kurds were commies and distinct from the regular Kurds. If they concentrate strictly on the YPG wouldn’t that be good?

Accepting that they are Syrians as well as Kurds is their best option to survive attacks by Turkey
The world political establishment is not going to move borders to create a country called Kurdistan, Rojava or Whateverstan

Next questions to ask all pro-interventionists: to mitigate that potential situation, the US should expend
1) how many taxpayer dollars?
2) how many US soldier lives?

Huge sums of money.

And the instructors and advisors are still there. Not many lives, because our soldiers are the greatest.

Surprise! ;-D
