I simply do not believe that the West has the knowledge, the will, or the ability to shape the extremely complicated and endlessly vicious politics of the Middle East. And I defy anyone to show otherwise. It’s an unwinnable game of whack-a-mole.

Sounds right to me...

Typical intellectual. Frame the question in such a way the opponent cannot win. The West does not need to "shape the extremely complicated and endlessly vicious politics of the Middle East" in all details and all ways.

The West needs to incentivize certain actions and attitudes:

1. Intolerance for terror strikes against the West.

2. No mass migration from the Middle East to the West.

3. No ethnic cleansing of Christians and/or Jews in the Middle East.

Now that we are breaking up OPEC, those goals may be possible.
