It was not a place of fun and games. And when that red phone rang it was wired directly to a four-star general at the Pentagon things got real. All eyes would have been on Shoup when he answered. Col. Shoup, he barked. But there was silence. Until finally, a small voice said, Is this Santa Claus?

Would you like to play a game?

In the 90s I bought a speaking chess thingee from Radio Shack, where you play against it. It would insult you and/or make fun of you as you played against it. Fortunately you could turn that mode off, heh.
Still have that device - should fire it up again one of these days.
Have to have a thread sometime re: Freeper’s favorite WW3 movies. Doesn’t seem Christmas is the best time for that, tho, heh.
Not a Hustler, the side glass doesn’t move when they open the lid...
My favorite world war zero story was published in 1898.
“War Of The Worlds”, I reckon?
My parents phone # was one digit off from the big grocery store. About once a month we’d get a misdial. In my more uncharitable moments I would play along. “Oh yes ma’am, we’ll send one out right away.” Yeesh. Idle hands really is you-know-what. Sorry lady, wherever you are. :)
Oh wow! In 20 years itll be an antique! Thats pretty awesome
You reckon correctly. I’m listening to the Tantor audio version right now, have 5 DVDs, a few dead tree editions and electronic versions...
...I still shudder when the tentacle touches the boot heel in the coal cellar, about 55 years since I first read it!
I haven’t seen that game in years! I wonder if it’s packed away somewhere or my wife got her hands on it and sold it.
Isued to have this game!
Hey, I found the chess device I have on youtube just now! I don’t know how this guy got it to talk on a roll like this, but it’s kinda cool:

Why turn it off?
When driving I will sometimes make a wrong turn so my GPS will ‘talk’ to me.
Ever notice how she seems to get agitated when telling you to go back for the umpteenth time?
Funny how the mind picks that up because YOU would be getting upset about the same time as she does....<: <: <:
Oh, yeah, they could be hilarious - great good fun for us rotten kids! I also enjoyed the times a good one was pulled on me, like the time I answered the phone and it went like this -
-”Hello”
- “Hello. Is this Mr. Karp?”
- “No, it isn’t”
- “I’m sorry. I must have called the wrong fish.” ::CLICK!::

If you turn left when it said to turn right and it says “No, I meant turn to your OTHER right”, get out of the car and run for your life!
Back when all of NYC had the 212 area code, my phone # was xxy-1234. Some friends at work had it as xyy-1234.....which at the time was actually the Secret Service.

I read it when I was a youngun - it was an enjoyable read, though I wasn’t heavy into SciFi. About the same time, I read Stoker’s “Dracula” - that was the one that had parts that spooked me.
