CARITA BEACH, Indonesia (AP) — The deadly tsunami struck in the dark, without warning.

At least 222 people were killed as waves smashed into houses, hotels and other beachside buildings Saturday night along Indonesia’s Sunda Strait, in a disaster that followed an eruption and possible landslide on Anak Krakatau, one of the world’s most infamous volcanic islands.

More than 800 others were injured and dozens were reported missing after the tsunami hit coastal areas along western Java and southern Sumatra islands at 9:27 p.m. Saturday amid a Christmas holiday weekend, the Disaster Management Agency said. The death toll could increase once authorities hear from all stricken areas.

“Tsunami hits without warning”

Tsunamis usually don’t warn anybody that they’re coming. But if you live near an ocean/sea one is gonna come your way sooner or later. Poor people.

Just this past October a tsunami killed 1500 people on Sulawesi, just northeast of Java.

Not true. That area did not want US warning systems prior to the last Tsunami. However, buoys and warning systems are in place now.

Perhaps it occurred faster than expected. Perhaps because it occurred due to the volcano vs an earthquake- That i don’t know.

“Not true.”

I was actually just making a pun there on the oddly written headline.

But, now that you mention it -
“Since tsunamis are imperceptible in the open ocean, do not return to port if you are at sea and a tsunami warning has been issued for your area. Tsunamis can cause rapid changes in water level and unpredictable dangerous currents in harbors and ports.”
https://ptwc.weather.gov/ptwc/faq.php

In this particular case:
“This was not a common tsunami,” said Costas Synolakis, director of the University of Southern California’s Tsunami Research Center. “This was a volcanic tsunami ... it did not rise to the level of triggering an alert. So from that point of view, the Tsunami Warning Centers were essentially useless.”
Because of Anak Krakatau’s proximity to shore, Saturday’s tsunami likely struck 20 to 30 minutes after some sort of volcanic activity, according to Synolakis.”

Sometimes shirt happens and there’s not a thing you can do about it but hang on until it’s over. Unexpected suffering is part and parcel of existence.

We must outlaw oceanfront hotels and resorts.

Tsunami again in the same area that was struck a decade ago? Trump’s fault...

The official death toll, so far, for the tsunami at Palu in October is now over 3000, but there are at least that many more still missing but not recoverable. They were in the area where the ground liquified, and they sunk into the ground under their collapsed houses. The government has simply designated the area a big cemetery, and ceased recovery efforts.

That one was off the western end of Sumatra, on Boxing Day 2004, following a 9.1 SR earthquake.

“U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted support for Indonesia: “We are praying for recovery and healing. America is with you!”
The U.S. State Department also expressed its support”
Screw the A.P. The State Department is not a different entity; it is directed by our supreme government executive, President Donald J. Trump.
If Trump wants to say the Indonesians are women-maiming savages, the State Dept. will say that. If nobody will say that, fire them and I’ll say it.
What’s the pay?
I’m getting more and more pissed off about people dissing my president! :)

Usually, they are preceded by an Earthquake. However, if you are by a seashore, and you see the water recede far back, head for high ground immediately!

As awful as a tsunami can be, I think I’d need to change my underwear and pants after seeing just that eerie pulling back of the water preceding it.
It’s something like the greenish sky before a tornado hits, “I gotta bad feeling about this”....

Yeah - the “without warning” bit was probably lack of good public communications system....once one sees the sea receding it is probably too late to get out of range of the incoming deluge...have seen anecdotal stories of folks out to sea and being borne up on a gentle swell as the tsunami passed in deeper water.
