President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Defense Secretary James Mattis will depart the Pentagon by January 1, a date earlier than anticipated, and will appoint Patrick Shanahan as acting Secretary.

The president’s announcement, made via Twitter, comes days after Mattis stunned Washington by announcing his resignation, prompted by what the former marine said were policy differences with Trump. Shanahan is the Pentagon’s number 2 official.

The fact that he would have to open his pie-hole and criticize the President PROVES he has no honor, no loyalty, and not a lot of intelligence.

This is that part burns me. The COMMUNITY ORGANIZER from kenya treated the military like a DOORMAT. Sent our boys and girls home in BODYBAGS due to awful ROE. Yet the Deep State/military brass never, ever went off the reservation, resigned and attacked him public.

Now we have a POTUS that bends over backwards to suppport the military and we get sporting attacks on him. Just unbelievable. I blame the Never Trumper “conservatives” for near all of this. They emboldened the careerists to “resist”, undermine and hamstring President Trump. So here we are.

You’re so right.

The good thing is to realize how many of these assholes are giving up and going away. Parasites like Flake and Corker may be the most annoying cretins on the planet right now (well, outside of the Chuck ‘n’ Nancy Show), but soon they will be GONE, alone with Paul Ryan, these military careerists and a bunch of other anti-Trump idiots.

General Mattis dedicated his life to serving this country. While I definitely disagree with his take on what we should do in Syria, I give him the benefit of the doubt. He’s earned that much.

Benefit of the doubt? What doubt? The bottom line is that he was too immature to realize he does not set National policy, he executes it. So when he didn’t get his way, he walked out the door leaving the troops to their fate. He could, and should, ever made in his post and executed the policy to the best of his ability and for the well-being of his troops. He was just a big talker if you ask me

Sadly, he was far more “dedicated” to Barack Obama than President Trump. Frankly, I have never seen a bigger bunch of ingrates than this current tantruming bunch over at the Pentagon. POTUS gave them a massive budget increase at huge political cost. We now have trillion dollar deficits because of the parallel increase in domestic spending that the Dems insisted on to fund the military properly. And POTUS gets exactly ZERO thanks for that. He is undermined and insulted at every turn. Unbelievable.

He had a disagreement with the boss. He didn’t fight him, he didn’t do some major backstabbing campaign. He obviously felt strongly about it and decided to part ways. Hell, he even just signed the withdrawal order.

People are allowed to disagree and go on to other things. I don’t know why people on either side are freaking out about this.

Given that Obama outright fired the guy, I'd say he didn't get along terribly well with either of them.

I lost confidence in Mattis when he went limp on removing men in dresses from the armed forces...

The military never disses the Democrats, because each officer knows that there would be an unceasing project of personal destruction directed against him, and everyone he loves, for YEARS afterwards.

The same reason people hesitate to publicly dis the Cartels.

I think that those of you who are quick to talk down Gen Mattis are missing the point.

What this President has shown an unerring ability to do is to pick individuals to accomplish that task, and then, having completed that task, to replace them with the right person for the next job.

Gen Mattis is a warfighter. He was brought on to destroy ISIS and give our allies the ability to defend themselves.

That task is complete. The next Defense Secretary needs to be more attuned to the second step - which is more diplomatic in nature.

You already see that, instead of a vacuum, the departure of US troops is followed by the moving in of allied forces (Saudi Arabia for example, whcih will work with the Kurds against ISIS - and serve to balance out Turkey).

My guess is that the President is now working on a much bigger Mideast regional peace plan. Whether it comes off or not I don’t know, but I do know that the odds are better than they have ever been.

Stay tuned. There are 2 whole years before the next election, and this is the proper time to take risks.

I too. And try not to be a hanger on.

Someone is going to step into the vacuum of power, and I suspect Mattis doesn’t want that

Is anyone thinking the 2020 Democrat ticket? Maybe Trump got wind of it and basically fired Mattis.
