Scientists can now quickly determine a chicks gender before it hatches, potentially ending the need to cull billions of male chicks worldwide.
The worlds first ever no-kill eggs are now on sale in Berlin after German scientists found an easy way to determine a chicks gender before it hatches, in a breakthrough that could put an end to the annual live shredding of billions of male chicks worldwide.
The patented Seleggt process can determine the sex of a chick just nine days after an egg has been fertilised. Male eggs are processed into animal feed, leaving only female chicks to hatch at the end of a 21-day incubation period. If you can determine the sex of a hatching egg you can entirely dispense with the culling of live male chicks, said Seleggt managing director Dr Ludger Breloh, who spearheaded the four-year programme by German supermarket Rewe Group to make its own-brand eggs more sustainable. Its not about winning or losing, he added of the worldwide race to find a marketable solution. We all have the same goal, which is to end the culling of chicks in the supply chain.
Of course, theres competition, but its positive in that it keeps us all focused on that goal. An estimated 4-6 billion male chicks are slaughtered globally every year because they serve no economic purpose. Some are suffocated, others are fed alive into grinding or shredding machines to be processed into reptile food. The culling is a messy solution to a thorny problem of modern poultry farming. Humans have bred chickens for one of two purposes: to produce eggs, or meat. Yet half of all the animals bred for this purpose are considered useless.

In Asia, they use ultrasound to cull female humans - this image freaks out abortionists and feminists...
Transgender activists - take note. :)
In many ways it would be easier if humans laid eggs...
In some religions life is deemed to have started at insemination.
“In many ways it would be easier if humans laid eggs...”
Today your comment is considered sarcastic or humorous. I bet right now they are trying to figure out a way around abortion by genetically modifying the human female to lay her eggs before fertilization and then incubate the results until artificial birth. With this culling and human modification becomes endless.
The Godless, mindless insanity of the left never ceases to catch us off guard!
We have 2 beautiful granddaughters. The youngest needed surgery, would cost $100K. We were willing to pay for it. But Cook’s children’s hospital in Ft Worth did it for free. They looked over their finances and determined that there was no way they could afford the only health insurance that their company offered them, $2k a month... They only make about $4k a month. So we said not to worry we would pay for it. (before Obamacare they ALWAYS had health insurance and never neede or used it )
A “friend” was putting us down for offering to pay. He is an X Catholic priest. I told him that most people would have just aborted her. I am against abortion (thought he would be too)
I am thankful she will be 2 in January! And I would give her all my money and earthly treasures. I would give her a kidney, eyes, lung, I already gave her my heart! So she had her kidney surgery in Sept - 9.5 hours. She had her spinal surgery Dec 6. She is now out of pain and learning to walk normally.
Her husband works for a small company that does offer health insurance but it is very expensive. THis is the first time they ever needed health insurance, and first time they couldn’t afford it.
Our son works at a huge company and his is $1K a month and they never go to a doctor. Never sick.
Our son in law’s sister has health insurance through a major company and only pays $500 a month for 4 of them.
ObamaCare only made the monthly premiums go UP. Didn’t help anyone.
So thankful and blessed our kids didn’t go for an abortion.
While the chick is in the egg is a little early to be assigning roles to it, dont you think?
Humpty’s Law?
I want the world of GATTACA. There’s no reason I should have less control over the design my progeny than of my house, computer, or car.
A friend had a farm. It was all new to him. He ordered sexed chicks to have a high percentage of female chicks for egg layers. It was supposed to be about 90% hens. The actual count was closer about 70%. So when he had a whole bunch of young roosters fighting over the hens, I helped him slaughter the roosters which were then the main course that Sunday dinner. The rest went into the freezer.
If you are a guy anymore, you need to find a hideaway!
I don’t understand the killing of all male baby chicks. I realize that Frank Perdue isn’t in Asia, but doesn’t anybody over there raise chickens for use as broilers or fryers, oven-stuffer-roasters.....wings? Or any use other than laying hens?
Did we not learn that feeding animal products to herbivores can be a bad thing?

It wouldn’t surprise me, and yes I was being sarcastic.
I see what you did there.
Oh, I hear a “pinnngg”!
Man-hating feminazis are not happy over this.
It sounds to me like they are still killing off the male chicks. They are just managing to kill them 12 days earlier than by normal industry practices.
The article states that the eggs containing male chicks are processed into animal feed. Is that processing more or less humane than the usual culling method, which involves throwing the male chicks into a macerator that completely pulverizes them within milliseconds? How quickly does the processing kill the male chicks, vs. the maceration process? The only advantage I see to earlier culling is that the hatcheries will spend less on incubating and producing unsellable chicks. However, the decreased incubation costs might be offset by the costs of determining the gender of the chick in the egg.
The real breakthrough in humane egg farming will occur when male chicks can be prevented from being conceived. This company certainly has not achieved that.
Whoever sold those chicks was unskilled or sloppy. When I was a kid and my dad would order chicks for our ranch, we rarely had more than 5 or 6 baby roosters for the one or two thousand chicks we had ordered. In addition, at least for the commercial sales, the hatchery would pack an extra 4 chicks per box of 100 to cover losses during shipment and to make up for any males we accidentally received.
Do not understand why the cocks cannot be raised as poultry meat.
Agreed. Billions utterly wasted where there could be a thriving capon industry. (Caponization would be preferable since rooster meat is generally too tough and capon meat very tender, although some people have found ways to make rooster meat tender.)
