We definitely need border security, but a wall covering the entire Mexican border may not be the best use of funds. Here are some of the things a wall does not do, and for which more funds might be specifically useful.
Inspection of cars, trucks, buses, and marine vessels: Currently, only 1 in 5 cars is inspected crossing the border.
Drug cartel tunnels: Go right under walls. We need some sort of ground penetrating electronics to hear digging and transporting underground.
Drone airlifts: I can imaging using drones to carry drug packages/bombs/disease germs over any fence. What kind of detection/deterrence is possible for this threat.
Some sort of scanning including infra-red might be more effective along areas that really might not need a fence, like the cliffs along the border river in places.
Build a wall sounds so simple, but it is not. Simple ideas for simple minds? More thought is really desirable since our enemies will try to be very clever.
