While I am a bit sad that Gen. Mattis is leaving, there are more out there and honestly, he made a better General than SecDef.

Mad Dog was a good combat general. As a political thinker, not so much.

That’s true. His resignation letter says it just right, he as the sense and dignity to leave, knowing he does not share Trump’s vision. That’s something a leader would do, but which a political hack would never even think of doing.

Many Marines consider Mattis to be almost the second coming of Chesty Puller. Someone in the swamp got to him.

Exactly. Mattis was the guy you wanted when the SHTF, but he was a little out of his depth fighting the Washington bureaucratic wars.

Plus, he rose to high rank under W and Obama. You have to figure that he was going to resist some of his new boss’s initiatives, or at least de-prioritize them in pursuit of things he personally felt were of greater importance. It was clear that he had played out his string.
