No no folks, this is positive. Best person for the job, regardless of race. Many white actors play and have played non white characters. I’m non PC and I hate identity politics and I see nothing wrong with a great actor playing a role. Besides, it’s acting... not reality.. always have to keep that in mind...
History should NOT be mocked!
These same people would throw a HUGE hissy fit, if a white person were to portray ANY other race and they have done exactly that, over the makeup and taped eyes for an Asian person.
And do you REALLY believe that there is a dearth of fine WHITE actors in the UK, for the role she STUPIDLY stuck a black one in?
How about Oprah portraying Queen Elizabeth I? You really okay with that? If so...WHY?
Ditto. If the guy is a good actor, give him the job. I see nothing wrong with it. Its a freaking movie, not a affidavit.
This sort of casting has been dine in Shakespeare plays for some time.
And if the movie really is already the travesty of history people say it is, maybe non-traditional casting is the least of its distortions.
Except the actor was not chosen on the basis of the best available for the role. He was chosen from a pool that excluded all white actors.
As for the suspension of disbelief, the tone and theme of a movie either allows for it, or makes it painfully obvious that youre watching a movie. To succeed the details must be consistent with the internal reality of that films construct. Period details of say, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum will be different than those found in Ben Hur.
This casting decision may or may not work, but there is simply no good reason to do so. It is different, I think, to intentionally cast other than white actors for Hamilton, where that was part of the gimmick, than it is to exclude white actors for ONE role and substitute a TOKEN minority out of historical context.
This is a biopic, implicitly historical and therefore deceptive, not fantasy.
Give the ostensibly great actor “white face” and I might let it pass.
