USDA moves to tighten restrictions on food stamps

The Trump administration is setting out to do what this year’s farm bill didn’t: tighten work requirements for millions of Americans who receive federal food assistance.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Thursday is proposing a rule that would restrict the ability of states to exempt work-eligible adults from having to obtain steady employment to receive food stamps.

The move comes just weeks after lawmakers passed a $400 billion farm bill that reauthorized agriculture and conservation programs while leaving the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which serves roughly 40 million Americans, virtually untouched. […]

Currently, able-bodied adults ages 18-49 without children are required to work 20 hours a week to maintain their SNAP benefits. The House bill would have raised the age of recipients subject to work requirements from 49 to 59 and required parents with children older than 6 to work or participate in job training. The House measure also sought to limit circumstances under which families that qualify for other poverty programs can automatically be eligible for SNAP.

None of those measures made it into the final farm bill despite being endorsed by President Donald Trump. Now the administration is using regulatory rulemaking to try to scale back the SNAP program. …

The US is bankrupt and needs to do something to hold down welfare costs. If you subsidize anything you will get more of it.

“Will work for food.”

Isn’t that what the signs say?

There needs to be an END to people buying fillet mignon, dragon fruit, nutritionally worthless snack foods, etc. with food stamps in the line ahead of you while you make do with hamburger, apples, and potato chips right behind them, paid for with your own money. Then, in the parking lot, you see them drive away in a late model car while you’re in your beater. Especially if those people are illegal criminal invaders.

Poorly written article. There have been zero food stamps for years. Use of the term Food stamps is a way to rile up conservatives not tuned in for over a decade.

In the late 1990s, the Food Stamp Program was revamped, with some states phasing out actual stamps in favor of a specialized debit card system known as Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT), provided by private contractors.

EBT has been implemented in all states since June 2004.

SNAP and ACCESS cards have been euphemistically called “food stamp cards” for several years now.

Well, Pelosi once inferred that it could get you out of “job lock”, thus stimulating the economy. (Remember those days?)

A Supplemental ‘Nutrition’ Assistance Program shouldn’t be needs tested by income, it should be needs tested by income AND nutritional status. Loads of obese people getting the last thing they need, additional calories, from SNAP. We should be getting height and weight measurements on all applicants for this. If they’re obese they either should get nothing, or at most, should get an EBT card good for only a calculated amount of ‘diet food.’ Let Moochelle’s school lunch architects specify the details.

Aaaah no -—that seems to be a bit over-the-top for me.

I certainly get your point but the government asking for height and weight? Nope.

Everything I heard about the bill is that it is another stinking pile of garbage bill put on POTUS’s desk by Congress. Locks in no food stamp reform for 5 years, IIRC.

Thw way I read it, the President can simply sign an order preventing the Federal Government from recognizing ALL EBT Transaction for reimbursement, and Force the States to go back to food stamps.

Anyone asking for government freebie handouts SHOULD meet certain requirements.

If they don’t want intrusion, then don’t take the handouts.

Look at you drivers licence, they’ve already ‘asked!’ It’s impossible to know whether the program is meeting its offfial goals (as opposed to the unofficial one of buyingthe Democrats the votes of lazy coach potatoes without such measurements. And they should be periodically repeated and analyzed to show whether the alleged malnutrition is improving. And don’t give me no libertarian jive about not letting the feds have such personal information. Anyone claiming such is either pushing to ending the entire program as unconstitutional at the federal level, as would Davey Crockett, or is a hypocrite. I’d rather devolve such programs to state, local, or ideally private charity levels, but so long as liberal ideals, backed by raw liberal political power are forcing me to spend my tax dollars, the liberals running the program should be held to those ideals.
