A campaign aimed at raising money for a border wall on the crowdfunding website GoFundMe has raised more than $4 million of its $1 billion goal in under four days.
The page, called "We The People Will Fund The Wall," was started by Brian Kolfage, a Purple Heart recipient and triple amputee who lost his legs and an arm during a rocket attack in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The campaign was launched earlier this week with a goal of raising $1 billion to donate to the construction of a wall along the southern border of the U.S. Funding for the wall, a major campaign promise of President Donald Trump, has come under questioning in recent weeks as Trump first hard-lined funding negotiations, then retreated.
Trump threatened a partial government shutdown if Congress couldn't pass a budget that included funding for the wall, which Democrats staunchly opposed. He later backed down from the threat, saying he'd find funding another way and allowing for the passage of a funding bill that'd avert a shutdown. Advertisement
Kolfage said it's now "our duty as citizens" to raise money for a border wall. In three days, the campaign has raised more than $4 million from nearly 70,000 donors.
"Like a majority of those American citizens who voted to elect President Donald J Trump, we voted for him to Make America Great Again," Kolfage wrote in the campaign. "President Trump's main campaign promise was to BUILD THE WALL. And as he's followed through on just about every promise so far, this wall project needs to be completed still."
Kolfage said the cap is set at $1 billion because that is all GoFundMe allows. He said he is trying to get them to raise the limit.
"If the 63 million people who voted for Trump each pledge $80, we can build the wall," he wrote. "That equates to roughly $5 billion, even if we get half, that's half the wall. We can do this."
Sorry - I pay taxes, and with all the crap my tax money is spent on, they can readily use some of it on the wall. We don’t need a Go-Fund-Me *surtax* for the wall - if we want to show support for Trump and the wall, the Go-Fund-Me effort should be for the purchase of yellow vests, to be distributed free to anyone who wants to chat with Pelosi, Schemer or any of the rest of the cabal about this matter.
(note: that’s supposed to be Schumer, but I can’t argue with the FR auto-correct on that one)
Awesome. Can someone provide a link to this GoFundMe page, which I hope is legit? (As you know there have been *many* GoFundMe scams)
No more melting away.
WOO HOO! We're in, for more than just $80 each. :-)
I will donate for sure..but just need to know the legal issues with this, I mean for sure the money can be used for the border wall? I would donate 150 bucks, so would my mother, if we know 100 percent sure that is where the money would go
The real problem is that money donated to the fed/gov, which this would be, cannot be stipulated be spent on the project it was raised for.
Only Congress can decide upon the projects to be funded so this money would go to the Treasury and used for general expenses of running the government.
Waiting? All you have to do is go to the site and read the details posted there. It’s about as full a disclosure as you could hope for.
Of course. No guarantees that something won’t glitch.
But, as a donor myself, I now have skin in the game.
You?
What’re you waiting for? Inaction is what got us here.
Some things require a risk.
The point is not whether the fund can raise the $5 BILLION. The point is to send a message to the politicians, the president, and the people who think they are all alone out there that NO, we are all in this.
Hope you’ll reconsider waiting.
The money donated cannot be used for the intention. It is unrestricted government revenue spent only as Congress allows.
Go away Tory.
I gave a measly 100 bucks but if I see this thing is really going to happen I’ll prob give 1K.
The point I’m making is this, give 20, 50, 100 whatever on a lark. My goodness all of us have pi$$ed away thousands over the years. Why not a pittance now to give a message and then sit back and watch what happens.
No, it won’t go for the Wall but as Congress sees fit to spend it. Sorry.
Wow. You can’t toss in $5 to send a message?
Heck, when I go back to donate again (it is now sending the message at half a million dollars an hour, according to another post here), I’ll pay the $5 for you.
Look at the law. It wasn’t my idea. I hate to have to bring reality into this issue, I know how that sets you off.
If the velocity gets as high a $1M/hr it will only take 40 days to do this!
Looks like you replied to the wrong guy on this thread. I’m already in for $100 and as I see the momentum climbing, I’ll be chipping in again. I’m fully in agreement about sending a message.
As you would agree with me and disagree about the yellow-vest sentiment, this is a helluva lot cheaper than going to DC and getting tear-gassed by Antifa or some crud.
The point is political. We are making a statement. Everything is not so literal. Many project are citizen funded. Battlefield monuments etc.
“No, it wont go for the Wall but as Congress sees fit to spend it. Sorry.”
An inane statement. Congress cannot “spend” what they do not control. These are private funds Einstein.....NOT IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN! Therefor they cannot touch them.
No....I was pretty much attempting to back up your opinion with my example.
