At Least Nine Dead in Train Crash Near Turkish Capital

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to identify those responsible after a high-speed train rammed into a locomotive near Ankara, Turkey’s capital, before sunrise Thursday, leaving nine people dead and dozens injured.

Mr. Erdogan said prosecutors had opened an investigation into the crash and that three people had been detained.

“All aspects of the accident will be investigated, and those responsible will be identified,” the president said in a televised speech.

Turkish television broadcast footage from the scene showing rescue workers racing to help passengers caught in an entanglement of wrecked carriages covered by light snow.

The high-speed train with more than 200 passengers on board was 5 miles into its journey from Ankara to Konya in central Turkey when it crashed into a locomotive used to inspect tracks at 6:30 a.m. local time, Turkish officials told television outlets. The train catapulted the locomotive to the side and ran into a station overpass, which collapsed on the carriages.

In July, 24 passengers were killed and 318 injured when a train crashed in northwestern Turkey. Authorities blamed the accident on bad weather, saying torrential rains had badly damaged the ground under the tracks.

Could simply be single car inspection loco did not shunt ( signal) so high speed train had a green light, so to speak.
