not being a public burden was a requirement for permanent residency (green card) back in my day. When was it removed?? Also, a round-trip ticket for visas were required.

As I understand it, it is also a common requirement in other countries, including Mexico.

As recently as 30 years ago, someone emigrating to this country had to have a sponsor who would take responsibility for the immigrant, if the immigrant didn’t find a job. Period.
