SHANGHAI/BEIJING (Reuters) - A former Canadian diplomat has been detained in China, two sources said on Tuesday, and his current employer, the International Crisis Group, said it was seeking his prompt and safe release.
Michael Kovrigs detention comes after police in Canada arrested the chief financial officer of Chinas Huawei Technologies Co Ltd [HWT.UL] on Dec. 1 at the request of U.S. authorities, a move that infuriated Beijing.
It was not immediately clear if the cases were related, but the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver has stoked fears of reprisals against the foreign business community in China.

Here we go. Tit for tat.
Headline: Moron Who Should Have Known Better Arrested in China
State department needs to issue warning to any US citizens traveling to China could be detained and/or jailed without cause.
Yeah, that's what if feels like.
However, a simple bail hearing in Canada shouldn't be allowed to drag on for a week.
Hasn't that always been the case?
Iran's leaders are not even embarrassed when they caught deliberately doing crazy things.
We knew this would happen...
In a Sword of Damocles, way, of course. That's why the pay is so good. You take the bucks, you take your chances.
Who’s this sources guy he’s in every news story.
Is this the same arrest that was reported to have embarrassingly coincided with President Trump’s meeting with Chinese leadership? Perhaps with President Xi? From the reports I saw, it said that President Trump was unaware it was going to happen, and it sounded like the U.S. DOJ was involved.
Can anyone enlighten me?
No...this is the arrest of a former Canadian diplomat in China.
Whether the Canadian is a Western spook or not is unknown.
From the article: “Michael Kovrigs detention comes after police in Canada arrested the chief financial officer of Chinas Huawei Technologies Co Ltd [HWT.UL] on Dec. 1 at the request of U.S. authorities, a move that has infuriated Beijing.
It was not immediately clear if the cases were related, but the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver has stoked fears of reprisals against the foreign business community in China. “
However, it answers my question, the Canadian arrest was at the request of the United States, but apparently this international request was not reviewed with POTUS, even though he has Constitutional authority over foreign relations.
Looks like more deliberate resistance to POTUS from the intelligence or justice communities.
LOL. too bad Justin doesn’t own any aircraft carriers.
I have to say I was surprised the Canadian government complied with the US. The Liberal Party has always been a handmaiden of the ChiComs. Have to wonder if pajama boy didn’t know the arrest was happening?
The Chinese has about as many spies in Canada as it does the US, due to the fact the Liberal party won’t do and has never done anything about it. So China sees which country is the weakest - Canada or the US.
Q: Anyone seen the former head of Interpol lately...?
The PRC has been putting the bag on people for a few months now.
Also known as Suck-up to the Press.
That's possible, but don't forget the Chinese have their own entrenched bureaucracy...and this arrest seems more directly aimed at them.
Two deep states going at each other.
