I recall reading that all the transformers are now made in China. Something like 90% are made overseas. There is a two year time frame to order and get one. A real vulnerability.
We need to harden the ones we have and make spares available.
We have done some work on that.
It is the big ones at the end of long transission lines that are most vulnerable and are hardest to replace.
The Westunghouse plant that built the large transformers was closed long ago. Last I heard transformers were still being built in Canada, Another issue is that transformers that large need a schnabel rail car for transport. That means railroads need fuel to operate. The cars aren't common.
