In a new DHS report that warns that the electric grid is the prime target of terrorists, Americans are being urged prepare for the up to six months without electricity, transportation, fuel, money and healthcare.
People no longer keep enough essentials within their homes, reducing their ability to sustain themselves during an extended, prolonged outage. We need to improve individual preparedness, said a just-published report to President Trump.
There needs to be more individual accountability for preparedness, adds the report, Surviving a Catastrophic Power Outage, from the Presidents National Infrastructure Advisory Council and published by the Department of Homeland Security. It looked at the potential of a power outage of up to six months and recommended Americans have enough supplies on hand for a minimum 14 days, a standard for some prepper organizations.
Build a Culture of Preparedness includes objectives to incentivize investments that reduce risk, including pre-disaster mitigation; closing the insurance gap; helping people prepare for disasters; and better learn from past disasters, improve continuously, and innovate, said a key recommendation.
“...plastic sheeting....”
Seriously, I’ll go to Lowe’s to buy some plastic sheeting for a small project. Don’t need much, doesn’t even have to be a high mil. BUT...I always wind up buying a box with a roll that’s 10-12’x100’.
And I’ll use ever bit of it eventually.
Me, too. Did you ever read “Rendezvous” by Nelson DeMille?
You know what I really really like? Those big rolls of thick brown paper that you can use for shelf lining, for sloppy weather days to line the boot tray by the door, etc.
We’ve got the food part covered, and water, and firearms.
Our big point of discussion is do we protect our business or our home?
Does homeowners insurance cover looters? Does business insurance?
I don’t want to leave the wife alone at a time like that, even if she is armed, but I don’t see how we protect both.
“Did you ever read Rendezvous by Nelson DeMille?”
I remember us talking about it. I did not (embarrassed). My library did not have the “book”, but had the audio version. I didn’t follow up for whatever reason. I had Hoopla at some point in the past but got rid of it.
HOWEVER...I just re-did Hoopla and downloaded the book. I will listen to it.
Thanks for the reminder.
+1 on the brown paper rolls. I created a huge sign out of it & posted it on the front of the house when my wife came home from retiring. Big enough to embarrass her!
Have you retired? Congrats to your wife!
We’re both retired now. Time to travel some!

____________________________________________________________________________
The report describes what they consider a “catastrophic power outage” to be, with five bullet points.
Events beyond modern experience that exhaust or exceed mutual aid capabilities
Likely to be no-notice or limited-notice events that could be complicated by a cyber-physical attack
Long duration, lasting several weeks to months due to physical infrastructure damage
Affects a broad geographic area, covering multiple states or regions and affecting tens of millions of people
Causes severe cascading impacts that force critical sectorsdrinking water and wastewater systems, communications, transportation, healthcare, and financial servicesto operate in a degraded state
The report calls the U.S. power grid a “prime target” for terrorists, and urges Americans to be prepared for up to six months without electricity, money, gas or even healthcare.
It also warns “People no longer keep enough essentials within their homes, reducing their ability to sustain themselves during an extended, prolonged outage. We need to improve individual preparedness.”
I wonder if fires can be started by people hacking into system and sending an outrageous amount of current downstream....
