^This. They do it every year, so even if all the films are garbage, they can still pick the “best” for an award. If just once someone from “the Academy” would step up and announce that no films made during the past year met their standards for an award, it might be more entertaining.
Exactly. There is no standards. Part of any standard should be are the "award nominee films and actors" year to year better than previous award winners. If the answer is negative then leave the Oscar for Best Picture, actor, etc vacant.
Announce on LIVE TELEVISION...There were no films released this year that have met the standard for an Academy Award. The nominees were deficient in X, Y, or Z. For those reasons we are not awarding a prize this year.
Might actually scare the film execs into doing things that people want to see rather than stroke their ego's.

Members of a social bubble are being given “awards” by members of the social bubble. Ultimately they’re worthless in terms of significance. I picture it like forming a “special group” among my neighbors and having us award ourselves trophies for achieving little to nothing.
