Air Force study on EMP threat

U.S. military facilities involved in command and control of forces face a growing risk of disruption by an electromagnetic pulse attack or solar superstorm that could knock out all electronics at the strategic bases, according to a report.

The report by the Air Force Electromagnetic Defense Task Force, made up of civilian and military experts, also warns that EMP or geomagnetic disturbances could cause catastrophic damage and the loss of life in the United States.

“Multiple adversaries are capable of executing a strategic attack that may black out major portions of a state’s grid,” the report said. “An EMP attack affects all devices with solid-state electronics and could render inoperative the main grid and backup power systems, such as on-site generators.”

With heavy reliance on electronics, American society is not prepared to deal with the effects of either a nuclear weapon-caused EMP or a large solar flare that could disrupt critical electric-powered functions for months or years, the report says.

One of the key threats facing the military outlined in the report involves potential EMP attacks on command and control systems used to communicate with and direct military forces.

China’s drive to become the dominant power in the advanced, high-speed 5G digital communications technology also poses risks to the U.S. military. “The states or non-states that control the 5G network will dictate or control all digital transactions including the ability to share and receive information,” the report said.

“Because control of 5G is roughly equivalent to control of the internet, open 5G is critical to freedom and free-market economics,” the report noted. “Meanwhile, access to the 5G-millimeter wave bandwidth will be critical to operations in all war-fighting domains, in particular, space [command and control].”

This is the reason for the sudden alarm over Huawei.

Remember when they were going to develop and distribute a US anthrax vaccine..?

That was over 12 years ago.

Such BS - our military has been EMP hardened for 40 years. I think we have that figured out by now.

also warns that EMP or geomagnetic disturbances could cause catastrophic damage and the loss of life in the United States.

This much, at least, is true. Society in general is wide open to EMP attack.

They must have put it in the water 'cause I never got anthrax. Always trust your government.

What they had...was the anthrax research from the 1950s/1960s and the vaccine developed from that...which was they pumped into all of use in the Gulf-War. Any research since? Hear the silence?

I think they got around to Russian research and kinda figured out that the modern anthrax was ten times worse, and the vaccine was 50-50 at best.

The EMP thing though...they’ve known since the 1970s what it takes to knock out an entire region. A 3rd world country could easily knock out California, and there’s very little you can do about.

I have some intimate knowledge on this program, as I researched methods to utilize EMP to trigger a cyber attack, at AFRL. The problem isn’t really government facilities, since those are somewhat harden but the fact that our government/DoD utilizes the “Cloud” (Google and Amazon servers) to store and process critical data. A lot of those server farms, because of their “eco friendly” purpose with open roofs to cool the servers, are extremely susceptible to an EMP attack.

The civilian infrastructure is a different story.

It is very good they are taking this seriously. I know my friend Bill Forstchen, who wrote a bestselling novel based on an EMP attack, “One Second After,” has been warning for years about effects of an EMP blast.

Yes, that's an excellent book, very, very, believable. As I'm sure you know, there are two books that follow. In book 3, can't you just see nothing but liberal democrats occupying the hardened structure near the end?

A solar event could knock out much of the world.

Help me out here.

By what mechanism will an EMP be delivered?

My understanding is only a nuclear explosion can create enough electrical energy to disrupt components miles away from the actual explosion. And it has to be high-altitude to have the coverage required. It’s not like Achmed could blow up a nuke backpack from his rental SUV.

If so, we already have Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) well publicized to our potential enemies that a missile or bomber attack on our nation will be answered with full-on counterstrikes, even before the potential nuclear explosion arrives to EMP us to the stone age.

MAD has actually kept us safe for 50+ years. The biggest danger is a potential enemy thinking they can survive a nuclear war, at least the leadership, while completely destroying ours.

I just don’t see missiles being lobbed at us without a massive response. And frankly, if we wait to “see” who it is from or what is the purpose, we’re already dead.

Any attack requires a massive response on our potential enemies. Russians, Chinese, North Koreans and Iranians, to name a few.

Guess what? They all know this. The only ones we need to worry about are the mad mullahs of Iran, and even so, the Russkies better keep a leash on them, because if they want an Armageddon, Russia will be nuked, too.

The electromagnetism from magical EMP bomb will be so powerful, that it will suck the iron out of our blood, blowing it right through our skins. So we won’t have anything to worry about.

I should be a writer. Let’s see... “The Day After” was already by a gang of lefties as a title. How about “One Second After?” Uh, no. that’s already in use, too.

Oh, I know! I’ll call it “One Microsecond After!” Then, everyone will tell our leaders to completely get rid of our defense forces, and we’ll live happily ever after under globalism! Right on! Far out! “No more war!”

[Heapin’ helpin’ o’ stinky irony and sarcasm there.]

Except neither the Chinese or Russians accept the docrine of MAD. They’ve both developed offensive proxies to launch first strikes against the US and Europe respectively. The strikes would be aimed at the C&C, land and air strategic assets. Only SLBMs would be capable of responding and would be depleted attacking the proxy. At that time China and Russia invoke their mutual defense treaties with these countries and launch a full attack upon the US and Europe.

In reality China is the only one which likely still intends to do this. They realize they cannot compete with Western culture so they must destroy it to achieve global ascendency. They don’t want to just defeat us militarily. They want to replace us. They require our complete destruction.

The grid very well may go down but unlikely to be an EMP. It will more likely come from cyber hacking. I read that there are 10,000 cyber attacks on our grid everyday. Sooner or later somebody is going to hit that magic combination.
