Reminds of me the old bs stories of how computers would eliminate the use of paper in offices.

My wife as a former head RN of a busy FP practice just laughs when she hears that bs.

The auto driving may work someday on well managed and kept up freeways with no humans driving. Then, accidents will be incredible re numbers of vehicles involved and the deadly results.

The roads in the northern part of California are in a constant state of repair with minimal markings on the roads re lanes, exits, merges and other issues. The SFO airport has been under reconstruction since the late 1960’s. Routes that worked in the early am might not even be available after 12 pm or vice versa.

People with good driving records and good vision have problems with the above that often changes on an hourly basis. There is noway that current computers can handle that.

I’m not a ludite. My first job was with IBM. We had the first pc’s that came out. About 2 decades ago my wife bought
me a Motoral Flip phone.

Since then we had several Android smart phones, we have windows laptop in our office, we use Chrome books, I have a Fire Tablet for books. I will be buying my wife an I Pad for Christmas, for her Grandma/relatives/friends texting and gmail use age and ??

We have bought our grand kids I Pads and I Macs so they didn’t have to lug a ton of books in their private high schools and colleges.

There is no AI programming that is cost effective and able to handle the variables of self driving vehicle on today’s roads.

I’ve long said I wished I was wise enough to have bought stock on paper companies the first time they started talking up the paperless office. It should have been obvious that with greater ease of producing paperwork and documents that paperwork and documents would flourish.

It hasn’t? I own a building engineering firm and have not willingly printed a paper in 5+ years. Only if some agency or client requires a wet signature do I print.

And engineering was once one of the most paper-hungry industries. A complete set of plans for a large project required a handtruck to move. Every formal communication from contractors required 4-6 copies of the same thing so duplicates could be kept throughout all the required folders. If an intern forgot to refile something they looked at, it could be lost forever and cost a client millions down the line. Paper was an absolute mess and digital storage 100% saved our day.

Now everything is done on tablets and TVs. All the work done over a big firm’s entire lifetime can fit in the palm of my hand. All changes, messages, and everything ever done perfectly archived and retrievable in seconds. You can have dirt cheap multiple offsite backups that can be fully restored even if the building is leveled.

When I started in the business, half the floor space in firms was taken up by boxes of decaying yellowing files. Now, I have only one tiny folder that takes up half a drawer. Only for certificates and the few similar things that must be original if gubmint demands.

There is absolutely no practical reason for paper files in this age. Unless your industry is mission critical and must operate during war/EMP/no grid
