Former Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) penned an op-ed Tuesday calling for the Senate to be abolished and for elections to be publicly funded.
Dingell, who represented Michigan in the House for over 59 years, wrote for the Atlantic a series of suggestions to address the "unprecedented cynicism about the nobility of public service itself."
The former lawmaker noted that in 1958 a survey from the University of Michigan found that 73 percent of Americans trusted the federal government to do the right thing almost always or most of the time. In 2017, the same study conducted by the Pew Research Center found that number down to just 18 percent.
One of the causes of frayed trust identified by Dingell was how a "minority of obnoxious asses can hold the entire country hostage to extremist views" because of the electoral college system and a Senate that provides two representatives to each state regardless of size.
"California has almost 40 million people, while the 20 smallest states have a combined population totaling less than that," he wrote. "Yet because of an 18th-century political deal, those 20 states have 40 senators, while California has just two. These sparsely populated, usually conservative states can block legislation supported by a majority of the American people. Thats just plain crazy."
Dingell also suggested moving toward full electoral participation by automatically registering all American citizens to vote when they turn 18 as well as campaign finance reform to improve accountability.
"Public service should not be a commodity, and elected officials should not have to rent themselves out to the highest bidder in order to get in to (or stay in) office," Dingell wrote.
Well he is half right.
we should abolish the house of representatives .
With extra knuckles...
I think they are serious about that “register everyone at 18” comment.
I also think that given the opportunity they will require proof of having voted in order to qualify for welfare, student aid, or any other gimmedat program.
Getting their supporters off the couch means that we never win another election.
“Democrats are always telling us what they have planned. Most Republicans dismiss it as ‘crazy talk’. They may be crazy but they’re also serious. They will destroy any institution to seize power.”
While I cannot go back into the minds of people from decades ago, I suspect that most Jews in Germany figured: “Oh there goes that silly Hitler guy looking for votes”, and when warned by the Jews who actually did understand Hitler, they looked at them the same way my dog looks at me when I try to speak Cantonese to her.
Probably the same for Russians just prior to their 1917 ‘liberation’, and Cambodians prior to their 1975 ‘liberation’. “Oh please”, they thought, “It can’t be that bad, it’s not like foreigners are taking over”.
Above are examples of “Normalcy Bias” as us preppers call it. It goes like this: “Since it has never happened in the past, it can’t happen in the future.” And while the United States did have a very bloody civil war, those issues are now settled, so it cannot happen again.
...until it does.
A better solution would be to expel California from the Union.
” how a “minority of obnoxious asses can hold the entire country hostage to extremist views” But enough about you, Dingelling.
I don't think so. Like most Democrats, he believes in a single all powerful leader of their choice and a puppet sham legislature who will do the bidding of the great leader. Moreover, the Democrats are actually putting policies in place to achieve this goal. They are actively working to destroy our elections system as free elections are the biggest threat to their ambitions. Once elections are nothing but a charade, then they will destroy the rest of our constitutional government and lock up their opponents. California is well on the way.
They probably will try to lower the age to 16.
This POS is still alive? I thought he was dead.
To address Mr. Dingel the response is “Hell NO”
Every point he made was completely in the mindset of total mob rule. The “excesses of democracy” I believe were the words used in civics class to describe the majority running roughshod over the minority. Nothing in Mr Dingel’s prose speaks to the rights of any minority.
A little thought experiment:
Lets’ expropriate white people’s property.
Let’s execute the Jews
Let’s throw open the borders to anyone who wants to come here.
Let’s deport all blacks back to Africa
Let’s execute all Blacks.
And on, and on, and on. If you can get a majority to vote for it then it’s OK to do...right, Mr. Dingel?
It's actually part of the DemoKKKratzi "ballot harvesting" strategy.
You think their computers don't know who has voted, and who hasn't?
If someone hasn't voted, the KKKratzis will "take care" of that for them...
DemoKKKratzis desire Das LeftyFuhrer
We are a nation of the United States only because the Senate guarantees that smaller states cannot be opressed by larger ones.
For 59 years this guy lived off of the taxes paid by American citizens, never had to have a real job, and now has a pension for life - but he wants to change the system so that those who don’t agree with him aren’t represented. The kind of change we need isn’t abolishing the Senate, it’s extremely strict term limits so that people like him can never become career politicians.
We could do away with the House, too .. and Supreme Court. Just appoint a Czar to Dingell’s liking who can serve for life. It’s all good.
Article 5 stipulates that states equal representation in the Senate is untouchable

When this movement kicks in and the blue states figure this out, they will try to secede, until they find out how much of the US debt they themselves owe.
Is he proposing an amendment to the constitution? A Constitutional convention?
Then how does he plan to do this?
Again, it is typical of the misunderstanding of “a nation” that the Left employs to denigrate the institutions that try to help keep us a federal constitutional republic.
Their tool is to employ various forms of some majority of the national “popular vote” as a stand in for “the nation”. It is not and never can be a stand in for the nation.
A nation is not merely an accounting of the numbers of people within it.
A nation is the villages, towns, cities, counties and states within it - the places people live and have most of their life cast within - not merely it’s “national” popular vote.
Both the electoral college and the senate help to hold the nation together, help prevent it from splitting apart, by preventing clear majorities of the places in the country from being overwhelmed by a tyranny of any mere majority “popular vote”.
It is an error manufactured by the left, out of its hatred for the nation that we are, that it bemoans the inability to impose mass universal agreement on any and every possible policy, nationwide, with states, and even their counties, cities, towns and villages NOT beholden to rules from Washington D.C. for everything.
When they bemoan that not enough can be accomplished, as a nation, what they really mean is not enough of their agenda. For the sheeple though, using the Left’s handmaiden, the media, that issue is always written as if the things the Left cannot get done are necessities the nation cannot do without.
It’s all a lie.
Their goal is power and control.
They will destroy any and every American institution and tradition go gain both.
Dingall: the Constitution is just an 18th century political deal.
Dingall must be on his way out. One last volley for Camrad Stalin...
