Liberal Lies About Bush And The Willie Horton Ad
The Daily Caller ^ | 12/03/2018 | Derek Hunter

HW’s passing was met with what always greets the passing of a Republican – a rehashing of liberal grievances against them. The most popular liberal grievance against Bush was the famous “Willie Horton ad” in the 1988 campaign. Liberals declared it to be racist, even though nothing about the ad was untrue, and blamed Bush for it, even though it was run by an outside group and not by the Bush campaign or with their blessing. The Bush campaign ran a different ad about the Massachusetts furlough program that did not mention Horton at all.

Still, liberals spent the weekend blaming Bush for the ad, calling it a racist dog whistle. We play both and dissect the whole thing.

Massachusetts had a furlough program for criminals. In 1973, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that this right extended to first-degree murderers. The Massachusetts legislature then passed a bill prohibiting furloughs for such inmates. In 1976, Governor Dukakis vetoed this bill arguing it would "cut the heart out of efforts at inmate rehabilitation."

Willie Horton and two accomplices robbed a 17 year-old gas station attendant, and then fatally stabbed him 19 times after he had handed over all of the money in the cash register. They stuffed his body in a trash can.

Horton was convicted of murder.

In 1986, Horton was released as part of a weekend furlough program but did not return. In 1987, in Maryland, Horton twice raped a woman after pistol-whipping, knifing, binding, and gagging her fiancé.

Dukakis continued to support the furlough program even after this incident.

The Bush campaign produced an ad attacking the Massachusetts furlough program. It showed prisoners passing through a revolving door while telling how liberal Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis had supported releasing violent criminals.

After the election, Democrat leaders said their defeat was caused by the racism of the Bush campaign. Democratic operatives unearthed an ad featuring the mug shot of Horton that an independent group had run in New England for two weeks.

Democrats continue to lie about it today.

The Democrats and the media say that anyone who opposes allowing violent criminals to continue to commit crimes is racist. And they say President Bush was a racist.

I don’t think this is the current controversy surrounding GHW Bush.

This Massachusetts prison furlough program was already infamous before the 1988 election. The first political mention of it in a campaign context was by Senator Al Gore (D-TN) in a debate format prior to the New York Democrat Primary. (Remember when Al Gore was considered a ‘conservative’ Democrat?)

It was the Al Gore primary campaign that first brought up the Massachusetts furlough program to attack Dukakis, months before Bush advocates ran the Willie Horton ad.

Not that I doubt Bush41 wouldn’t have brought it up, but “Willie Horton” was first used by one of the failed Dem candidates in the primaries, iirc.

That ad campaign had Lee Atwater written all over it. He was G.H.W. Bush’s campaign manager in ‘88 and chief strategist. he died at age 40 of brain cancer in 1991. It could have been a different story if he had lived and managed the ‘92 campaign against Clinton. We need more Atwaters today more than ever.

That, and the “Dukakis in a tank” video help Bush win.

For fun, google and watch the Bubblehead ride in a tank.
