Yeah, we have a couple of available locations up here in Maine:
Brunswick Naval Air Station (closed) and Loring AFB, also closed.
We may have ice and snow up here, but no hurricanes to speak of.
Tyndall provided high-end training and development of air tactics.
Doing this requires more flight time than a Northern base can provide, especially bases locked in to snow, ice and storms for six months of the year.
The Wright Brothers and the US Army chose Montgomery, Alabama to be the home of their new flight school in 1911. That base survived all the long years and is now Maxwell AFB and my last duty station. Quite a history here, actually.
De Soto met Chief Tuscaloosa (Black Warrior) here in 1540. Wiped him and the Mabila Indians out at the Battle of Mabila a few miles to the West.
