I see you’re in Arizona. That kind of ground cover is pretty ubiquitous in the Southeast. Those pine needles are nominally 8 to 10 inches in length.

I grew up in Wisconsin.

I hunted, harvested, and ate quite a few fox squirrels while growing up.

They are found mostly in oak woodlots and mixed oak and white pine forests in Wisconsin.
