Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal on Wednesday denounced President Trump's attacks on military service members, including the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and retired Adm. William McRaven, who oversaw the operation that killed Osama bin Laden.
"His discussions on Bill McRaven, as well as his previous discussions on John McCain and others have been something thats deeply disturbing to a lot of thoughtful people, McChrystal said on ABC's Powerhouse Politics podcast. The fact that he would take on people in this vitriolic manner, I think is pretty upsetting to people."
"And the fact that he would be dismissive of the kinds of service that people like John McCain and others have given is also disturbing," McChrystal added. "I dont think it builds up the kind of trust that military people depend upon."
The president earlier this month aggressively criticized McRaven, who over oversaw the 2011 operation that killed bin Laden. After McRaven called Trump's antagonistic relationship with the media a "threat to democracy," Trump accused him of political bias towards Democrats and suggested the U.S. took too long to hunt down bin Laden.
The McRaven controversy came as Trump has been fielding continued criticism over his relationship with the military, as his detractors slam his comments about prominent veterans, his decision to skip a visit to a World War I cemetery in France last month and the fact that Trump has not yet visited troops overseas.
McChrystal, who just released a new book called "Leaders: Myth and Reality" about prominent figures throughout history, told ABC that he does not agree with Trump's recent assertion that no one has been more "with" the military than he has. Trump has frequently pointed to administration's large budget for the military as a sign of his unflagging support.
[Funding is] not the best metric of whether you support the military," McChrystal said. "The size of the defense budget is not a measure of patriotism or connection with those in service."
I dont think that President Trump has developed as deep a real connection of trust with the military as perhaps he thinks he has," he added.
Very well stated.
I suspect McRaven, McChrystal and some others being they retired as four-stars think they’re entitled to respect when they speak out on political matters very much the same as top actors, entertainers and athletes.
If they were as smart as they think they are they’d keep their mouths shut and have the respect of a lot more people in the nation.
I spent a career carrying typically either a M16, and later a M4 carbine, he said. And a M4 carbine fires a .223 caliber round, which is 5.56 millimeters, at about 3,000 feet per second. When it hits a human body, the effects are devastating. Its designed to do that. Thats what our soldiers ought to carry.
Thank you, FRiend.
That article shows what a gun grabbing POS that idiot McChrystal is. I would like to know what his opinions of the Winchester, Remington, Browning, etc. 30-06 semi-auto hunting rifles are.
The 30-06 cartridge fires a .308 caliber 150 grain bullet at a velocity of about 3000 fps so in essence the POS wants to disarm America.
In my view he is totally ignorant of our U.S. Constitution and the 2nd Amendment and the reason our founding fathers felt them necessary.
The only thing I see disturbing is McChrystals Obama loving ass. Same thing goes for all the Obama liberal generals that Trump had to appoint when he became president. Been two years now and the military has fine general officers that will put Americas interest first, not Sorors and the neocon globalists.
Fast track the O-5 and O-6 that lead rather than politic. Force the political creatures out.
Listening to the radio this morning... there’s a new book out on notable admirals and guess who is in it?
McRaven...
With the USS Biden listing and taking on water could it be the Democrats are looking to move the flag to the USS McRaven?
I got an idea. Quit attacking the President in public without provocation.
5.56mm
Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal on Wednesday attacked President Trump's attacks
Do these people think we take them seriously?
This turkey is sickening.
The jerk should have disappeared long ago, he’s well past his “sell by” date.
This is an old, old thread... I just bumped it because of the new book by an admiral whose name I did not catch being promoted called ‘Sailing True North...’ that has McRaven in it. Author- who is with the Carlyle Group- is being interviewed on Kilmeade. Given that book deals gave us ...Obama, etc...and are often politicized, I was wondering if McRaven is being groomed to run for office somewhere as a Dem or Rep since it seems a bit odd to include him as one of 10 admirals of character given how many admirals of character there have been in history. Listening to it longer though, it may not be that odd as the author isn’t setting them up as 10 greatest admirals of all time but more like his personal 10 most interesting...including the female one who gave us Cobol.
He’s hawking his book, thinking any publicity is good publicity
Wonder how much money McChrystal (or his relatives) has received from Ukraine?
